New additions to the library sys tem include a collection of small business materials at all four branches donated by Brunswick Community College Small Business 'Trees' booklet available The National Arbor Day Foundation.has published a . "Conservation Trees" booklet which is available to the public free of charge. The "Conservation Trees" booklet uses colorful photos and illustra tions and easy-to-understand descriptions to help people plant and care for conservation trees. The contents of the guide include: ■ How to use shade trees and windbreaks to save energy in your home. ■ How to attract songbirds to your yard. ■ How to save trees during con struction. ■ The right way to plant trees. ■ The right way to prune trees. Upcoming children's activities include a summer reading program, storytime hour for children ages two through five and arts and crafts pro grams. "Our summer reading program is designed to encourage and foster a love of books and an enjoyment of reading among young children," said library youth services coordina tor Irma Bryant. Visitors to the area are invited to use all services offered by county libraries, such as the Internet, CD ROMs and newspapers from the around the state and nation. However, there are some restrictions on what non-county residents can take from libraries. Temporary library cards may be purchased for $25 by out-of-county residents. The .cards are valid for one year and entitle the cardholder to borrow either an unlimited num ber of paperbacks, three cataloged books, or one audio tape or one videotape. County residents may obtain a library card by showing a North Carolina driver's license with a Brunswick County address, or proof of property ownership or employ ment in the county. Children age six and older may obtain a library card, but youngsters under 16 must have a parent's sig nature on the card. County libraries are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sunday, 2 to 6 p.m. The Southport branch is located on West Moore Street; the G. V. Barbee Sn branch is on Yaupon Drive in Yaupon Beach. A Bolt from the Blue Most thunderstorms happen durins the summer boatins season, and they can catch boaters unaware. Bolts of lightnins hotter than the surface of the sun can cause considerable injury, damage and death. Boats and boaters are especially vulnerable to lightning strikes because they are often the highest point in the area and become targets for lightning seeking a path to the ground. The best safeguard a boater has is to get off the water fast. But there are other precautions that can protect a boat from lightning. North Carolina Sea Grant offers boaters a pamphlet describ ing a method that directs lightning strikes safely through the boat with less chance of damage or injury.
