in Brunswick
For golfers, Brunswick County
presents more than just a challeng
ing course. It offers courses which
rank among the best in the nation.
Two additions this year -- The
Players Club at St. James Plantation
and Carolina National Golf Club at
Winding River Plantation — add to
the wide selection of outstanding
courses in the Southport-Oak Island
area. A mild year-round climate
helps to enhance the experience.
Carolina National Golf Club
Carolina National Golf Club at
Winding River Plantation is PGA
champion Fred Couples' first
Carolinas course. Five sets of tees
test golfers of all abilities. Currently
the back nine holes are open for
play and the front nine will follow
in July or August. Upon completion,
Carolina National will have 27
holes.
The course is carved out of rolling
hills and marshland with the signa
ture hole, the 14th, overlooking the
Lockwood Folly River. The nine
holes measure 3,507 yards from the
back tees, 3,006 from the blue tees
and 2,678 from the front tees.
Rates are $15 K4ofv!biy through
Thursday for nine holes and $30 for
18 holes. Fees are $17.50 for nine
holes Friday, Saturday, Sunday and
holidays and $35 for 18 holes. All
rates include cart rental.

Hewett Road.
Oak Island Golf Club
This par-72 course measures 6,608
yards from the championship tees
and 6,135 from the regular men's
tees. Because of the prevailing
southwest wind the toughest holes
are the par-four, 426-yard ninth hole
and the par-five, 553-yard 18th hole.
It has a slope of 128 and a rating
of 71.8.
Regular rates for carts and greens
fees in April are $32 for 18 holes and
$19 for nine. In May, rates are $34
and $20. From June to August, rates
are $38 and $20. In September, rates
are $34 and $20.
The clubhouse is located on
Caswell Beach Road about a half
mile past its intersection with
Yaupon Drive in Yaupon Beach.
