Players Club at St. James The Players Club is the newest of the three courses at St. James Plantation and it is also rated as the toughest. The course offers a tighter design with its fairways than the Members Club, which is more for giving to the golfer. The Players Club opened in December, 1997, and offers a good test to the golfer. Course slope and rating from the back tees is 149 and 75.1 and from the front tees 113 and 66.6. There are five sets of tees to challenge all levels of play. A special golf package> good through May 21, carries a rate of $75 per golfer, seven days a week. The package includes parking on the mainland at Indigo Plantation in r Southport, ferry ticket, transporta tion on the island, greens fees and cart rental for a day of golf on this subtropical island three miles from Southport. The rate is $93 per player from May 22 to September 6 and $75 from September 7 to January 4. The course, given a five-star rating by Golf Digest magazine, was designed by George Cobb. It measures 6,855 yards from the blue tees, 6,239 from the white tees, 5,536 yards from the yellow tees and 4,810 yards from the red tees. There is only one hole from which water is not part of the landscape, and water could come into play on 15 holes. Brick Landing Plantation Brick Landing Plantation offers some of the most breathtaking views in the area on the Intracoastal Waterway near Ocean Isle Beach. The course features bulkheaded greens, marsh, plenty of water haz ards and more than 60 sand bunkers. It has a slope of 141 and rating of 72.1 and plays to a par 72. The lay out is highlighted by one of the most memorable and intimidating par-three holes in the county and has a yardage of 6,700. Greens fee and cart rental is $38 to $70 depending on the-time of year. Rates vary in the summer season. Brick Landing Plantation is located on N. C. 179 between Shallotte and Ocean Isle Beach. Golf Links Lockwood Folly Golf Links near Holden Beach provides golfers a challenging outing on the banks of the Lockwood Folly River and the Intracoastal Waterway. Lockwood Folly is a par-72 layout with a variety of scenic holes and a yardage of 6,836. It has a slope of 139 and a rating of 73.8. Greens fee is $70 from March 20 to May 10 and includes cart rental. Fees and cart rental from May 11-31 is $60. From June 1 to September 3, the rate is $43 and includes the cart. From September 4-17, the rate is $48. To reach the course, follow N. C. 211 until just before its intersection with U. S. 17. Turn left on Stone Chimney Road and follow the direc tional signs. Lion's Paw For those who want to play with the big cats, Lion's Paw Golf Links at Ocean Ridge Plantation is about a 35-minute drive from Southport Oak Island on U. S. 17. It is consid ered among golf course designer Willard Byrd's best works. Golf Digest described it the "best in> the Myrtle Beach area." It has a yardage of 7,003 and plays to a par 72.
