On Saturday, April 11, the cham ber entered the ninth annual Robert Ruark Foundation Chili Cookoff. The chili was whipped up by Chuck and Donna Sandine of Southern Hospitality. It was yummy! We appreciate those who voted for our chili and honored us with the People's Choice Award. We are also thankful to Chuck and Donna, who donated all the fixings, time and lots of effort; booth, volunteers Joyce Maresca and Nancy and Bill Sphar; and equipment suppliers Barb's Seafood & Midtown Deli and Bobbie Frazier. We hope the Robert Ruark Festival raised lots of funds for its short fiction and poetry contests and art exhibit. On Thursday and Friday, April 16 17, the bark Endeavour passed by the waterfront on its way up the Cape Fear River to Wilmington. The time of arrival was hard to pinpoint due to the weather and currents, but SMYRE Smyre earns Rudd award Lee Smyre of Margaret Rudd and Associates Inc. has been awarded the company’s 1998 first quarter Champion Associate trophy. ,, The award is presented to the sales associate with the highest produc tion for the quarter. Working with the Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau; Cape Fear Yacht Club, Tow Boat/US Southport and Water Taxi, Cape Fear Pilots Association, City of Southport offi cials and administration, Ship's Chandler Restaurant and Southport Historical Society was a delight. We were disappointed when Capt. Carl Blake's representatives were unable to disembark the ship due to weather and come ashore for some of that famous Southport hospitality. However, a token of our apprecia tion was delivered to them Tuesday from the City of Southport and the chamber. Items in the gift basket were donated by area businesses.
