Photo contest entries invited
An amateur photography contest with the theme “Coastal North Carolina
Rivers. Streams, Lakes and Waterways” is sponsored by the Brunswick County
Parks and Recreation Department. Entries will be accepted beginning May I.
Photographs must have been taken between August, 1997, and May. 1998.
Color and black-and-white entries will be accepted and prizes will be awarded to
top photographs in each category. Entries will be on display at Franklin Square
Art Gallery through the month of June.

Long Beach activities noted
The following ongoing programs are offered by the Long Beach Parks and
Recreation Department:
■ Beachwalkers — Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. Walkers meet at The
Deck on SE 58th Street. No charge.
■ Bridge —Contract Party Bridge Club, second and fourth Wednesday. 12:30
p.m.: duplicate club, Monday, 1 p.m., and Wednesday, 7 p.m. Both groups meet
. at the Long Beach Recreation Cepter. No charge.
■ Hatha yoga — Monday, 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., or Thursday, 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at
the Long Beach Recreation Center. The cost is $10 per month or $3 per session.
■ Karatc/King Fu — Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center;
The cost is $10 per month.
■ Mature aerobics - Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m., at the Long Beach
Recreation Center. No charge:
■ Nutritional lunch for persons 60 and older — Tuesday and Thursday, noon, at
the Long Beach Recreation Center. Preregistration is required.,
■ Adult Basic Skills and GED training provided _by ^Brunswick Community
College— Monday afld Thursday, 6 p.’m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center.
No charge.
B PresChool Playroom for ages three to Five — Monday, Wednesday and Friday,
9 a.m. to noon, at the Long Beach Recreation Center. The cost is $20 per week or
$8 per session. Preregistration is required.
■ Quilters — Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center. No
charge.
■ Step aerobics — Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:15 a.m.. and Tuesday and
Thursday, 6 p.m. Classes will be held at 8 a.m. on the second Friday of each
month and there will be no classes on the third Tuesday of each month. The cost
to participate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is $22 per month; the cost on
Tuesday and Thursday is $15 per month. The drop-in fee is $3 per session.
■ Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) — Tuesday, 5:30 p.m., at the Long Beach
Recreation Center.
■ Weight room - Monday through Friday, 8 a m. to 8:45 p.m., and Saturday. 9
a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The cost is $10 per month or $1 per session for town residents;
$20 per month or $2 per session for non-residents
500-Mile Walking Club
A 500-Mile Walking Club is sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and
Recreation Department. Participants who walk 200, 300 or 400 miles during 1998
will receive a certificate and those completing 500 miles will receive a T-shirt.
Persons walking a thousand miles will receive a special “Thousand Mile Club” T
shirt. ;
A $5 registration tee is required. For further information, persons may call the
Brunswick County Pajks and Recreation Department.
Step aerobics class offered
The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department offers step aerobics
instruction'fqr £l5 per month or a $5 drop-in fee.

Dosher Memorial Hospital volunteers were honored at a luncheon last
week at the N. C. Baptist Assembly. Volunteers provided approximate
ly 35,000 hours of service to the hospital in recent years and contributed
over $40,000 to DOsher Memorial last yean

Calligraphers to host
lettering arts society
Coastal Calligraphy Collective, a
local group of calligraphy enthusi
asts, will host the annual general
meeting of the Carolina Lettering
Arts Society (CLAS) April 24-26.
CLAS promotes the study, prac
tice and appreciation of the lettering
arts. Its members hail from the
Carolinas and Virginia.
The guest lettering artist for this
year’s event is Peter Thornton, a

event planned
for kids, adults
Bark in the Park, a dog show for
children and adults, will be held
Sunday, April 26, 2 pm., at
Shallotte Township District Park.
Adult categories include best trick
and best costume; children’s cate
gories include largest, smallest and
most unusual dog, longest tail, best
trick, dog that looks most like its
owner and best costume. Classes
open to both children and adults are
obedience and agility.
