Photo contest entries invited An amateur photography contest with the theme “Coastal North Carolina Rivers. Streams, Lakes and Waterways” is sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. Entries will be accepted beginning May I. Photographs must have been taken between August, 1997, and May. 1998. Color and black-and-white entries will be accepted and prizes will be awarded to top photographs in each category. The cost to participate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday is $22 per month; the cost on Tuesday and Thursday is $15 per month. The drop-in fee is $3 per session. ■ Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) — Tuesday, 5:30 p.m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center. ■ Weight room - Monday through Friday, 8 a m. to 8:45 p.m., and Saturday. 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The cost is $10 per month or $1 per session for town residents; $20 per month or $2 per session for non-residents 500-Mile Walking Club A 500-Mile Walking Club is sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. Participants who walk 200, 300 or 400 miles during 1998 will receive a certificate and those completing 500 miles will receive a T-shirt. Persons walking a thousand miles will receive a special “Thousand Mile Club” T shirt. ; A $5 registration tee is required. Calligraphers to host lettering arts society Coastal Calligraphy Collective, a local group of calligraphy enthusi asts, will host the annual general meeting of the Carolina Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) April 24-26. CLAS promotes the study, prac tice and appreciation of the lettering arts. Its members hail from the Carolinas and Virginia. The guest lettering artist for this year’s event is Peter Thornton, a ‘Bark in Park’ event planned for kids, adults Bark in the Park, a dog show for children and adults, will be held Sunday, April 26, 2 pm., at Shallotte Township District Park. Adult categories include best trick and best costume; children’s cate gories include largest, smallest and most unusual dog, longest tail, best trick, dog that looks most like its owner and best costume. Classes open to both children and adults are obedience and agility. The event is sponsored by the Brunswick Area Responsible K-9 Owners (BARK) group.
