Bulbs nrfay be planted in late November or early December: however, some perenni als, woody ornamentals, biennials and hardy annuals may be planted also. Fall plantings will have the winter months to develop a strong root system which will make the summer months less stressful on them. Some biennials and hardy annuals will thank you for planting this fall. They will reward you with a beautiful display of flowers in the spring. BACHELOR BUTTONS: They are also called cornflowers. Plant seeds this fall and you will be amazed at what they will do next spring. Their flowers may look frag ile but they are very hardy. CANDYTUFT: They are consid ered to be perennials, but there are a couple of hardy annuals that are worth planting. Try the globe and rocket candytufts. Globe is a low to medium growing plant. In the spring the flowers will be various shades of pink. Rocket candytuft is not as col orful but does have white flowers with a sweet fragrance. FOXGLOVES: A biennial which likes to be planted where it gets the sun during the winter months, but likes partial shade for the hot sum mer. Foxgloves can grow to a height of five feet including the flowering spike. LARKSPUR: Also known as del phiniums, these grow well in this area. If they are started from seed this fall they will reward you next year with colorful spring and sum mer flowers. Just remember: They do not like to be crowded, so when they sprout be sure to thin to ten to 12 inches apart. Manv herbs like to be planted in the fall. Check with your local gar den center or nursery tor those hetbs which will thrive with a fall planti ng Now is a good time to look for bargain plants. Garden centers and nurseries sometimes have fall plant sales. Be sure to check the plants for diseases and pests prior to purchas ing. Check the root system by gently slipping the plant out of the pot; if the roots are white or beige and have a good hold on the root ball, the plant is healthy. Even if the roots arc root-bound they have possibilities for your garden. Do you have a shrub or tree that you wish you had planted some where else in your landscape? If so, and the tree or shrub is not too large, now is a good time to transplant. If you plant or transplant this fall make sure to give your plant or transplant the proper amount of water. It may be winter, but the plant still needs sufficient water. A good time to put down winter mulch is after all the leaves are off your deciduous shrubs. By replacing the existing mulch you will have fewer pests and diseases next year. Now is a good time to take a soil sample. Remember, soil sample analyses arc provided free in North Carolina.
