West Brunswick (6-2) was with out star running back Joey Lance, who is recovering from a leg injury. The Bulldogs (7-1) were without head coach Stu Ennis, who was serving a one-game suspen sion for a dispute involving one of his assistant coaches a week ago. Bulldog running back O. J. Batts rushed for 146 y^rds on 18 carries while teammate Dennis Harrison gained 107 yards. Batts scored on a 37-yard run to open the scoring in the first quarter. Harrison ended the scoring in the fourth quarter off a 38-yard run. Charlie Bryant added another touchdown in the second quarter off a 4-yard run and Michael Lisane scored on a 1-yard run to give Wallace-Rose Hill a 20-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Chris Dunn caught a 16-yard pass from Greg Weeks for another touchdown. West Brunswick failed to score twice while inside the Bulldogs’ 10-yard line. Whiteville 20, Fairmont 19: Whiteville slipped past Fairmont, 20-19, in a conference game played at Fairmont. Wolfpack run ning back James Pone led Whiteville with 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Whiteville now stands at 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Waccamaw Conference. Cougs host first place Stallions South will try to contain South Columbus South Brunswick hosts South Columbus this Friday, ut % Cougars may be without six key starters due to suspensions from an incident at the East Columbus game last week. Coach Kirk Brozy’s Cougars (3-5, 1-4) were declared 28-18 winners in that ®-- 6<*nic omciais stopped the contest in the third quarter. South Columbus this season is undefeated at 8-0 and 5-0 in the conference. The Stallions defeat ed West Columbus on Friday, 39 6 and have outscored opponents this year by a margin of 314 to 31. South Brunswick is led by [senior quarterback Jonathan Williams and a number of nm BROZY i ning backs who have shared the football this season. I Mario Tooley is the leader with 374 yards. Four defensive starters and two key offensive players may not see action on Friday, pending a decision by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Jonathan Williams still leads the Waccamaw Conference in passing at 88.7 yards per game. The team is still number one in passing at 93.6 yards a game. South Columbus was picked to finish first in a nine team conference and are ranked 8th in one poll among 2A teams in the state. They are tied atop the league with West Brunswick at 5-0. The two teams play in the final game of the regular season on November 6. Coach Joey Price’s team is led by senior quarterback Jeremy Fonvielle and running backs Kent Nealy (886 yards), Eddie Ravenell (563 yards) and Deshaun Stephens (594 yards). The Stallions could challenge for the 2A state title this season. “They are probably the best team I’ve seen on video,” said South Brunswick coach Kirk Brozy. “They can run the ball extremely well. The ejected players is going to make a major difference.” Other conference games this week include St. Pauls (4-4, 3-3) at West Brunswick (6-2, 5-0), West Columbus (4-4, 3-3) at Whiteville (2-5, 2-3) and East Bladen (3-4, 2-3) at East Columbus (0-6, 0-5). Scorpions host Topsail Pirates always play North to close games I iNonn Brunswick will try to go 3-0 in Coastal Plains 1A Conference action this Friday when the Scorpions host the Topsail Pirates. The Scorpions enter the game off a 43-14 win over Lejeune that gained first place in the league. North stands 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference with its only loss, a non-conference game, to Tar Heel. Last season, coach Garry Bishop’s team went undefeated in conference play at 5-0 and 11-1 overall. Pamlico defeated Topsail, 40-0, on Friday. The , Pirates stand 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league place in last place in the standings. But North coach Garry Bishop isn’t taking the Pirates lightly. Coach Ron Howard’s team always plays the Scorpions to a tight game. North Brunswick’s Pedie Byrd gained 272 yards against Lejeune to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the second-straight season. He ran for touchdowns on four consecutive carries - for 21, 54, 48 and 81 yards. The Scorpions lead the conference in rushing with 303 yards per game. Byrd is averaging 252 yards per game himself. North also leads in passing yardage. Harold Andrews is second at 40 yards per game. North opened the year with hopes of defending its Coastal Plains 1A Conference title and improve on an 11-1 overall record- The Scorpions advanced to the second round of the 1A playoffs last season before los ing to South Robeson. _ junior lanoacK tony ineppara leads the Pirates in rushing this season along with Andy Diorek. Topsail played three tight ball games prior to last week’s shutout to Pamlico. The Pirates lost to Lakewood by five points, to Princeton by three points and to Lejeune by two points. The Pirates started the season off with a 28-0 win over Croatan but have lost seven straight. BISHOP North has won three in a row since the Tar Heel loss. Other Coastal Plains games this week include Pamlico (3-4, 1-1) at Dixon (2-4, 1-1) and Jones Sr. (3-4, 1-1) at Lejeune (4-3, 1-1). They didn’t stunt as much as I thought they would and I thought that would give us some problems because they can bring eight or nine guys, but they didn’t.” In the third quarter, kicker Gurkan Gur added a 21-yard field goal to extend North’s lead . to 37-6. Tremaine Mote intercepted a half back pass Lejeune threw and North took over on the Devilpup 41. That is where Andrews raced in for another touchdown with 6:25 left in the third.
