game last week.
Coach Kirk Brozy’s Cougars (3-5, 1-4) were
declared 28-18 winners in that
®-- 6<*nic omciais stopped
the contest in the third quarter.
South Columbus this season is
undefeated at 8-0 and 5-0 in the
conference. The Stallions defeat
ed West Columbus on Friday, 39
6 and have outscored opponents
this year by a margin of 314 to
31.
South Brunswick is led by
[senior quarterback Jonathan
Williams and a number of nm
BROZY
i ning backs who have shared the football this season.
I Mario Tooley is the leader with 374 yards.
Four defensive starters and two key offensive players
may not see action on Friday, pending a decision by
the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
Jonathan Williams still leads the Waccamaw
Conference in passing at 88.7 yards per game. The
team is still number one in passing at 93.6 yards a
game.
South Columbus was picked to finish first in a nine
team conference and are ranked 8th in one poll among
2A teams in the state. They are tied atop the league
with West Brunswick at 5-0. The two teams play in the
final game of the regular season on November 6.
Coach Joey Price’s team is led by senior quarterback
Jeremy Fonvielle and running backs Kent Nealy (886
yards), Eddie Ravenell (563 yards) and Deshaun
Stephens (594 yards). The Stallions could challenge
for the 2A state title this season.
“They are probably the best team I’ve seen on
video,” said South Brunswick coach Kirk Brozy.
“They can run the ball extremely well. The ejected
players is going to make a major difference.”
Other conference games this week include St. Pauls
(4-4, 3-3) at West Brunswick (6-2, 5-0), West
Columbus (4-4, 3-3) at Whiteville (2-5, 2-3) and East

I iNonn Brunswick will try to go 3-0 in Coastal Plains
1A Conference action this Friday when the Scorpions
host the Topsail Pirates.
The Scorpions enter the game off a 43-14 win over
Lejeune that gained first place in the league. North
stands 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference with its
only loss, a non-conference game, to Tar Heel. Last
season, coach Garry Bishop’s team went undefeated in
conference play at 5-0 and 11-1 overall.
Pamlico defeated Topsail, 40-0, on Friday. The
, Pirates stand 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league place in last
place in the standings. But North coach Garry Bishop
isn’t taking the Pirates lightly. Coach Ron Howard’s
team always plays the Scorpions to a tight game.
North Brunswick’s Pedie Byrd gained 272 yards
against Lejeune to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the
second-straight season. He ran for touchdowns on four
consecutive carries - for 21, 54, 48 and 81 yards.
The Scorpions lead the conference in rushing with
303 yards per game. Byrd is averaging 252 yards per
game himself. North also leads in passing yardage.
Harold Andrews is second at 40 yards per game.
North opened the year with hopes of defending its
Coastal Plains 1A Conference title and improve on an
11-1 overall record- The Scorpions advanced to the
second round of the 1A playoffs last season before los

Topsail played three tight ball
games prior to last week’s shutout

Lejeune was playing without
starting quarterback John Anness,
who was injured. Byrd answered the
Devilpup touchdown with a 54-yard
score with 3:33 left in the first quar

nected on two extra points for the
night along with a 21-yard field goal
in the third quarter.
Byrd added another touchdown
from 48 yards away in the first quar
ter as Lejeune could not bring him
down. Harold Andrews carried the
ball over for a two-point conversion
and a 21-6 lead.
But Byrd continued the damage
with his longest run of the night,
from 81 yards away with 7:21 left in
the second quarter. Scorpion quar
terback Sam Lance added another
touchdown off a 4-yard run with
1:51 left before halftime.
“We knew some plays that we
thought would work on them the
way they ran their defense, and they
did,” said Bishop. “We had a good
game plan for them offensively.
They didn’t stunt as much as I
thought they would and I thought
that would give us some problems
because they can bring eight or nine
guys, but they didn’t.”
In the third quarter, kicker Gurkan
Gur added a 21-yard field goal to
extend North’s lead . to 37-6.
Tremaine Mote intercepted a half
back pass Lejeune threw and North

“I was really pleased with the
effort that the offensive line gave us
tonight,” said coach) Bishop.
“Maybe we can get healthy for next
week and that will give us a little
more depth now, knowing that those
guys have stepped in and played a
full game and I can count on them at
anytime. I’m really pleased with the
way the offensive line played.”
