advertisements that lead to payment of money before items or services are providid, or those
that require a toll telephone call.
Writing a good classified art
1. Start with the item you are selling or the service you are offering. This
makes it easier for the reader to locate your item or service. Be specific in
which category you want your advertisement placed (see listings at right).
2. Do not try to include too many items in a single advertisement. Readers
may see only the first item and overlook others that would receive more atten
tion separately.
3. Check your spelling. Brand names are sometime unique and not known to
the proofreader. Include your telephone number in case there are questions in
the preparation of your advertisement.
4. Include the price of the item you are selling. Studies indicate more than
half of classified ad readers do not respond to advertisements that do not
include a price.
5. Keep abbreviations to a minimum. Make it easy for readers to understand
what you are selling or offering.
6. Place yourself in the reader’s position. Ask what you would like to know
about the item for sale or the service offered. Include information such as brand
name and other specific descriptions of an item.
