A Scrimmage in Which John Cox, Col ored, was Cut to the Bone Across the Left Temple and Duncan Steed, White, was Struck in the Face with the Butt of a Shot Gun and Knocked Sense less. COX IN JAIL-STEED WILL RECOVER For many years Ashboro has been noted as a town in which rowdyism riots, affrays and law lessness have been almost un known. Police regulation has scarcely been needed, as all our citizens seem to respect and obey the law. Even the colored peo ple arc not given to drunkenness and rowdyism as they are in sur rounding towns. Therefore our citizens could not have been more shocked if & thunderbolt had come from the clear sky, than they were Saturday night about 7:30 when suddenly and without any notice of trouble it was an nounced that Duncan Steed had been knocked senseless with a gun and John Cox had been cut to pieces. And as evidence of the statement both men gory with blood, were to be seen lying in the Ashboro Drug Co. store, the one being brought back to life by fanning and the other having his cuts stitched up to keep him from bleeding to death. The Bulletin reporter has inter viewed many representative men in regard to the origin of the trouble and what actually took Beans Mill. The free school at Hickory Grove will close on the 10th oi March, and they are expecting to have an old time exhibition to which one and all are cordially invited. Good roads is the cry every where, and the convicts should be put to making permanent im provements instead of plowing up the roads like they were pre paring to plant corn. The wounded men were carried to the Ashboro Drug Store and the wounds were dressed by Drs. Henley and Moore. Hundreds of people gathered in front of the drug store to witness the scene. Warrants were sworn out and Cox and Franks were placed un der arrest and taken to the court house and given a hearing before Justice Ridge. Cox was com mitted to jail to await develop ment and Franks was sent to the jail in default of $250 bond. It is not the purpose of the Bul letin to give the evidence as brought out in the preliminary. When the case is tried in the superior court, the Bulletin will give its readers a synopsis of the evidence. It was an unfortu nate affair and no doubt those who precipitated in it would not do so again if they could recall it. Ralph (Delayed from last week.)
