Letter Registry is Higher Postmaster General Will Increase i Fee From Eight to Ten Cents. Postmaster General Hitchcock has signed an order increasing the fee for the registration of mail from eight to ten cents, to take effect November 1. Thisv action followed the recom mendation of the committee now investigating the registry service and is in accordance with the views cf the registry experts re cently in conference on the sub ject at Washington. The order also increases the maximum indemnity paid to the owner of a lost or rifled letter from $25 to $50, thus doubling the department's liability for val uable articles entrusted to its reg istry branch. This additional in surance of $25 for two cents is granted at a much lower rate than is offered for similar amount by any private concern. , The changes ordered, the Post master General says, constitutes the first move toward making the postal service self-sustaining. No, 2 6 un The Tale of an Odd Adventure Northern Brazil. in Mr. Edward H. Cooper's ar ticle on South America and his reference to its poisonous snakes remind me of an interesting ad venture of a friend of mine in northern Brazil. My friend was making a collec tion of the poisonous snakes of the neighborhood, and as every one around us was aware of the fact many gifts of the kind were offered him. One evening he was writing at a table when a local person brought him a small spci men of one of the most deadly poisonous snakes of the neigh borhood. My friend who was very busy asked him to put it in a glass jar on the table, which was accordingly done. Unfortunately the hot night and other soporific influences proved too much for my friend's waking powers. He went to sleep with his head on the table and slept peacefully till awakened by a fearful crash. He had knock ed the table over, with the lamp on it; the lamp had naturally been put out, and, as his senses slowly returned he remembered that the glass jar had also fallen to the floor and the snake must now be loose. Obviously the best thing to do was to jump on the bed and shout for help and light. But the hut was empty and no help came. One could spend the night standing on a bed roaring for help; so, as there was only a space of about eight feet between him and the door, the snake col lector jumped down from the bed and resolved to make a rush for it." He had taken his boots off at an early part of the evening, and as he jumped he felt asharp vicious nip in the heel of his right foot. My friend , was a man with plenty of cool presence of mind. A servant entered Jhe hut at that moment. He summoned him, told him purtly that he had not five minutes to live and proceeded to dictate a will and various direc tions to his traveling companion and one or two other persons But death ta? ried an unaccount rr. 'y long time, and presently the reason of this became apparent The snake was curled up in a far corner of the loom, swaying and hissing angrily, and my friend - 1 . -CP UJ uau jumpeu uil tun ueu on to a piece of broken glass with which the floor of his room was liberally strewn.
