We know some merchants who think it is not worth while to adver tise during the first months of the year, because they don't expect much trade until later. Wonder what those same merchants would think of a farmer who should decide, that it was useless to plant anything in the spring because he does not expect to reap until the fall? Apropos of this matter of advertising, about which some people en tertain erroneous ideas, we call atteution to tUe following, which is re pro. duced from The Winston-Salem Journal. "With the approach of the new year, business men and merchants are planning their campaigu for business during H08. The progressive merchant, manufacturer, banker and business man in any line will in. elude in his plans a liberal appropriation for advertising, " always on'.- of the most important features of any legitimate business. It has been truly said that 'Advertising is the life of trade,' and all wide awake business men keep that fact in miud; and the customer 'is next' too, for men and women of this day and time have realized that they get the nest, freshest goods from the manufactuiers and merchants who advertise. Men in all lines of business are studying advertising. The Raleigh Evening Times of yesterday contain ed the f.ilhvvirjg concerning a recent article on bank advertising which applies with equal truth to other lines of business, as follows: "An article by Mr. J. G. Brown, of this city, in the Bank Advertise' h8 caused a good deal of comment by the press of the State, because of the soundness ot the idea set forth. Mr. Brown is himself a newspaper advertiser and knows whereof he speaks. Attention is directed to the concluding paragraphs of Mr. Brown's letter: '"You hear people say so and so is a good advertiser,' now why is iti' 1 1. is because they cannot pick up thiir paper without seeing 'so and so's advertisement. lie has always something t.) say, and they have be cmc interested in his advertisements interested enough to talk about hi in and bis advertisements. Be like him; ln.ik upon y..ur advertise ment as an investment; plan it care ful!;., judiciously and thoroughly; an i then regard the business you get from it .is the surplus.
