Correspondents should mail news letters in lime lor them w reach this office by Tuesday corning, to istare their appearance in the week's issue. Important happenings, such as deaths, fires, accidents, etc., may be 'phoued at The Courier's expanse A subscriber writes The Courier and asks : " Is it really true that West Virginia went Democratic in the recent election?" To be sure, such is the case, although it is a surprise to many that such is the case when it is known that in 1884. in the Republican tidal wave West Virginia went with the way of all the world that year and has since been joined to its idols like Ephrium of old, we have been taught to believe. The truth is the state has been in the Republican column because of conditions not generally known. The laws and customs had not provided any registration of voters, and in spite of the dili gence of Democrats the Republi cans in every election had im ported many negroes from Vir ginia and the District of Colum bia, and as many Republican miners from Pennsylvania, and had thereby made a Democratic victory impossible except by a revolution. This year the revo lution came. West Virginia not only has Democratic public officials, and will elect a Democratic United States Senator, but the chief value of the victory will be that the Democratic legislature will redistrict the state in a fair man ner and will pass a registration and election law that will prevent the further importation of Re publican miners and negroes, and thereby secure a fair election, permitting the will of the people to be expressed. The result will be continued Democratic vic tories. It might be noted that West Virginia is the state from which one U. S- G. comes, and it will be more readily seen why he is so abusive of the fair registration and election laws in North Caro lina. He likes a condition where no registration law exists and negroes and imported bums can vote as often as the Republican election officers need their ser- THE WAY TO GOOD ROADS. The best way to good roads in North Carolina is State aid to such counties as will help them selves by levying a special tax for good roads. This principle has been recognized m the estab lishment of 2,500 rural libraries in the state. It has been suggested that an expenditure of a quarter of a million dollars by the state under the direction of competent engi neers, supplemented by twice that amount by the counties, wonld, in five years, revolution ize the roads of the state. There would not only be a rev olution of the highways, but there would be a revolution in every department of life and commerce in the state- The results would be incalcula ble in giving life and increased vitality to every industry. The benefits derived would he several times the expense of the outlay. Randolph is a good county to move to and not a good county to move away from. Let us make it a better county. Increased interest in good roads should find endorsement by all parties. No matter what may be our political allignment the good roads preposition should be kept out of the way of personal interest or party advantages- In all political differences the chief end of the welfare of the county should not be lost sight of. Last Call for Subscriptions. The Courier in ifs laat issue of this year thanks one and all for the uniform courtesy received and the pa' moms many have made on 6ub8cribfcion. We politely request one and all to pay up and pay one year in advance where it is possible to do so. The Courier is doing its best to get on a paid in advance basis with all its subscribers in order that the business department may be able to get both ends to meet. Just a word as to the firecrack er situation. All the trouble and unpleasantness could have been avoided if the town commission ers had taken action at their De cember meeting to prevent the sale of firecrackers within the corporate limits of Asheboro. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ano her New County, Thee is no joke about that propo sition to form a new county out of portious of Guilford, Forsyth and Stokes and Kockingham, with Stokesdale as the county seat. There is merit in it, as was pointed out yesterday, but whether the legis lature will take heed is another ques. tion. Why pot work things all over any way- and make a spearate county out of all the larger towns? How would it do to make Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington, Durham, etc., counties cut them a-loose from the present country? We only have about half the counties not paupers now. There are plenty of men who want jobs; scores are waiting to be S'icrified ot the altar of an office, salary or fees. Greensboro Record. The Lexington Dispatch bas been figuring on the census andv the elec tion returns and finds that there is a great difference in the vote in rela tion to population in the counties in this Congressional district. For in stance, Randolph, with 29,491 popu lation cast 5,319 ballots or one for every 5.05 of the population, while Scotland county with a population of 15,303 cast only 036 ballot or just one vote for every 24 of the population. In Davie county one out of every C, voted, while in Uuion county toere was one voter in every 17 of the population. Over in Montgomery county every seventh person voted. Dividson couDty folks voted a little better than they did in Montgomery, one out of every six in that county casting a ballot. Davie county voted at a tatio of 1 to 7. Anson did a little better than Union, 1 out of every 15 of her population going to the polls. Richmond county's folks voted at a ratio of 1 to 14. Are there more women, children and "disfranchised" in Scotland, Anson, Union anl Richmond counties or are the voters just careless? Dispatch. Mr. Chas. A. Armstrong has opened up a law office in the Tnomp sou building, room 21. Mr. Arm strong has nude for Montgomery county one of the very best Clerks Superior Court with in the State for the past twelve years, and during that time he studied law, secured license, and is now one of the ablest lawyers of the county. We predict for him a brilliant future, a lucra tive practice and a legal career crowned with abundant success. The Montgomerian. Forbbidden Fruit. Persimmons are primarily a 'pos sum diet. There is nothing better Bmted to the possum digestion, and less suited to that of the bovine population. Mrs. Emma Kearns, a prosperous and progresssive farmer and stock raiser of the Uwharrie section, was telling the Courier last week of some of the doings ' of her fractions yearlings. After having lost several fine calves last years, Mrs. Kearns decided that one of the causes of their destruction was overdieting on persimmons. Accordingly this year she formed plans to keep her calves and 'simmons separated. She had all the bearing trees cat dowB, with two exceptions. One of these alone was in proximity to the pasture. Some of its branches over, nunar the fence and dropred the tempting 'possum provender over to tantalize the yearlings, do sue built a barricade about the for bidden fruit. Bat to no avail. "Them pesky critters" got through and filled themselves to repletion. Result, two mighty sick calves, who nave fallen off in weignt since com ing into knowledge of the fruit of the tree set apart for possums. t You Mart R-a4 rhl If Von Want The Benefit. J. W. Greer. Church, Soutb, near Asheboro on Monday night ot this week. There was music botn instrumental and vocal and short talks by Messrs. W. P. Wood and Wm. C. Hammer and Rev. C. A. Wood. It was a holly tree heavily laden with beautiful and useful presents. The handsome new church was crowded to its fullest capacity with old and young. It was an interest, ing occasion. The exercises were conducted under the auspices of the Sunday School of that church by the active, enthusiastic and energet ic superintendent Mr. J. . Walker. Tbis new church was completed within the last jear and is most creditable to the enterprise of those who built it. The Sunday School was organized about six months ago by Mr. Walk er and the enrollment now is 96. The average attendanee is at least fifty, and never less than forty. The Sunday School will continue the year round. Mr. Walker and those who are co-operating with bim in this landible undertaking deserve praise and thanks for their efforts.
