Every agency, of rural betterment becomes possible when instead of a small number of large landowners there la a, large number of small landowners, who occupy and till (he farms they own. Tenancy and ibolation disappear with their atten dant train of social ills. Better farming follows, along with better business and better living on the farm. The burdens of taxation are widely distributed. The few do nrt feel that their purses are milk ed by the tax-gatherer for the ben efll of the mans. Community effort Is easily centered upon better roads, bet i or schools, and better churches. And so, when we are struggling in our counties with all our might and main for better home and school conditions, we are saying to tnt landless man: "With all thy getting, get land. Multiplied home ownership is a bed-rock of safety for home, or community, and coun try. It is still possible to get under your owni vine and fig tree. Good 'and is still cheap in the South- Do not sin away your day of economic grace." "We are saying to the owner of large estates: "With all thy get ling, get at least the wisdom of in telligent self-interest. Sell small farms to likely tenants at reasona ble prices. Multiply the small farm- erp of your county and increase the value of your remaining acres." Put money in your purse meanwhile, t ou will; but consider the poor and towly and leave a place in the earth for them. Farm your own land. Consider the present, and apparent ly the permanent, high prices of term products. xnvest liberally in the means and agencies of conimun ity progress- The return to you is inevitably greater than the out lay." Moonshiner Born in Randolph Tells Truth Clayton Chrisco, the Moore coun ty moonshiner who was last week sentenced to the Atlanta penitentiary, o'r a year and a day and fined $10 and costs for illicit distilling, wrote the following sketch of his life and handed it U. Mrs. C. G. Petty, wife of Sheriff Petty, of Lee, as given by t;ie Express. My name is Clayton Chrisco, I- was born in Randolph county May 13rd, 1869-. I'have never been be fore the courts, not even as a wit ness. Had one little fight seven years ago. I nave no money ana have a wife and one child who are living at the mercy of other people. I have been in jail two months and have read the Bible through al though I have but little eduoatioa. Am convinced that I have done wrong; but the Bible teaches me ot to tell a lie, so I shall tail the tmth let the oonseqvences be what they may. I pray God and His peo ple to help me that I may from now on lead a better life. I wish that you would explain this to the court and ask its mercy for . me p.'ase." Scott & Bowne. Blooraneld. N. J 12-9 To Pat The Courier In Every Hosne in Randolph County We have commenced a campaign to put The Courier in everyXhom in Randolph county, and we want every person In this section of the state to begin to make ready to be waited on to this end. We have secured the srvlces of Mr. W. F. Hunsucker to work this field for us, and when he calls upon you don't consider anything else but coming to some arrangement where by you may give him your order. At the same time he is canvassing to place The Courier in every home, we are giving him our old lists with ' all datlngs, and having him call on all our old subscribers that those who are in' arrears may have the convenience of settling at their home the little that is due. How ever, we don't want you td feel un pleasant about this as we are only including this feature, as a case of necessity. We are not afraid of you and want you to feel that It is a pleasure for us to do every thing that we can to make all of cur transactions pleasant and con genial. You may not know it, but our running expenses are in the neighborhood of $500 per month, and you can readily see where every dollar we can get hold of is needed. Now If you can make any arrangements to help us to tha ex lent of your arrears, it will help us much, and we will appreciate it, but if you can not don't think we will think hard of yop. We will not. When you are in Asheboro, we want you to come la and make our office your headquarters. ' We want you to come In to see us. The heart will never forget its halloed Influences, and it will be a 'joy to which the years will only add new sweetness. Such a home is a constant inspir ation to good, and is a constant re si raint from evil. If by taste and culture we adorn our homes and grounds and add to their charms our children will find the quiet pleasures of rural homes more attractive than the whirl of city life, Such attractions and en joyments will invest home-life, school-liie the whole future of life, with new interests and with new dignity and joyousness, for life is Just what we make it. We may by out blindness live m a world oi darkness and gloom, or in a world full of sunlight and beauty and joy, for the world without only reflects th world within. The tasteful improvement of giounds and home exerts a good lrfluence not only upon the inmates, but upon the community.
