SHARE FARMING S AUSTRALIA S10 AND A WOMAN MY HOUSE BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD Plan That Seem Worth Copying Especially Successful With Big Wheat Crops. In view of the fact that the estimate of the p esent season's wheat crop of New South Wales is set down at near ly forty-two million bushels, exceeding last season's record by nearly nine and one-he If million bushels, it Is proof of the value of the share farming that a considerable number of the wheat farniii of New South Wales, and par ticularly the large ones, are worked on what Is known In Australia as the "shares" system. Under this system a farmer possess ing the necessary team and implement Arranges with the land owner to crop certain area for a season or for a number of seasons. The usual form of agreement provides that the land owner shall provide land, seed, two thirds of the manure, where manure is used, and bags for his share. The farmer does the cultivating and har vesting, using his own plant; provides one-third of the manure, and bags for his share. Up to a specifled yield of the crop the owner and farmer take equal shares; any excess becomes the prop erty of the farmer as a bonus to en courage good and thorough farming. This method of working large areas Is Invariably a success where the ar rangement is drawn up on a truly co operative basis, and is one of the most satisfactory ways of working large es tates. Share farming enables a settler with little mony at his disposal to ac cumulate enough means to buy land of bis own. Gladstone's Persuasive Power. Stafford house was the Garibaldian headquarters in London during the visit of 1S64; and a society pleasantry of the time was a proposal to marry the hero to the eld duchess of Suther land. Sir Mounlstuart Grant Duff tells how some severely practical person objected that this was impossible, be cause Garibaldi had a wife already. 'Oh!" said Abraham Hay ward, "we'll put up Gladstone to explain her away." The Way of It. "So the inan you dunned for that money wa very angry? Did you man ago to p-.cate him?" "No, I tried to, but he sot the stran gle held first." ATTENTION TO COLT'S FEET Practice and Observation Will Soon Enable Man to Determine Amount of Trimming Needed. Regular attention to the feet of colts :1b absolutely necessary in this country. The hoofs often tend to grow in ab normal ways, too long on one side, tending to twist the fetlock joint, or too long at the toe, which tends to i strain the ligaments, and which also itends to faulty action. In trimming the hoof all that needs 'to be done can be done with a rasp 'The hoof wall should be rasped off on 'the bottom surface until the relation 'Of the heel, side and toe is approxi mately one, two and three in length, and the work should be done in fiucb a manner as to cause the foot to rest .squarely on the ground. Practice and -observation will soon enable a man .who has fair Judgment to determine ) Just what trimming each colt neede i and bow often attention will be re tired. As a general rule the feet ahould be examined every six or eight weeks. Handy Hoof Hook. A. hoof hook should be included Is the equipment of a well regulated table. The feet of the horse should be cleaned every morning before he leaves the stable. The hoof hook will remove all litter, pebbles or anything that may have become lodged In th fOOt. Thin nrAPBIlttnn mav nanuml injury to the sole or sensitive struc tures .of the foot If the feet become very dry, pack them daily for a week I with some form of clay. Then apply I lard to the wall, t which may be i added pine tar and rosin. Bismarck' "Sacred" Number. Belief In the number 3 was al most a religion to Bismarck, for it ran like a vein of gold through all his dazzling career. He served under three months, and in three great wars and signed three treaties of peace. He was the father of the triple alliance, and from his three names and as many words in his family mot to, "Strength in Trinity," and his three children, there was no period or undertaking In his life in which this "sacred" figure was not of the best omen to him. HEALTH PAST FIFTY Careful diet is of utmost importance to men and women past fifty years of age; it keeps up their strength, and the oil food in Scott's Emulsion is a nourishing food, a curative medicine and a sustaining tonic to regulate the functions. It contains the medicinal fats of pure cod liver oil and science proves that they furnish twice as much energy as other foods then too, it creates pure blood, sharpens the appetite, relieves rheuma tism, strengthens the body and alleviates the ailments due to declining years. icott's is free from wines, alcohol or harmful drugs. But that ten spot, will afford her more ecstatic pleasure than a man could diw out of a hundred, or a clay pipe. First she will hunt up the last issue of the local paper and see what it has Vt offer in the way of bargains any thing, just so it is a bargain. These will be carefully and pains takingly checked off witr. :i two-inc'i stub of a pencil, and then it will be a hunt for a pair of shoes, or a summer hat, or any one of a thousand other things. The number of articles she will squeeze out of that ten spot is amaz injj. Where a man would spJid it t'.'. in one throw, a woman will have a list a foot long. There are hermit souls that live withdrawn In the place of their self-content; There are souls, like stars, that dwell apart, In a fellowless firmament; There are pioneer souls that blaze their paths Where highways never ran; But let me live by the sid or' the ro;.(!, And be a friend to man. Let me live in a house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by; The men who are good and the men who are bad, As good, and as bad, as I. I would not sit in the scorncr's seat, Or hurl the cynic's ban; Let me live in a house by the side of the road, And be a friend to man. I see from my house by the side of the road, By the side of th iu'iwa1 of life, The men who press with the ardor of hope, The men who are faint with the strife. But turn not away from their smfles or their tears, Both parts of an infinite plan; Let nie live in my house by the side of the road, And be a friend to man. I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead, And mountains of wearisome height, And the road passes on through the long afternoon, And stretches away to the night But still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice, Ami weep with the strangers that mourn, Nor live in my house l- 'iie sick of the road Like a man who dwells alone. Let me live in my house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by; They are good, they ere bad, they are weak, they are strong Wise, foolish, so am I. Then why should I sit in the scorncr's seat, Or hurl the cynic's ban? Let me live in my house by the side of the road, And be a friend to man. Sam Walter Foss. The other day a local merchant ele vated his chin, squared his shoulders, essumed a beliggerent attitude, and defiantly told us that "advertising doesn t pay. He is still alive, but let us consider a minute: A London baronet who manufac tures pills has sold a part of his real estate for the tidy sum $"0,000,000. He made it out of the profits of his business, and he built that business up by advertising-, often spendina; as high as half a million dollars c year in printer s ink. John Wannamaker, the best known and most successful merchant in thl? country, made his millions by adver tising, and said so. The great department stores of the country are kept alive by advertising and are coining money by more ad vertising. iou never hear of a large mercan tile house in this country that does not advertise, and advertise heavily. If a politician wants to make him self known to the dear people he uses the most effective means newspaper publicity. That is advertising. II a new son arrives at your house you are keen to have it "put in the paper," where your friends will see it, thereby advertising the fact that you are walking on eggs. if the editor called you a thief in a two line item and stuck it away in the most obscure corner of the paper, would you pass it by in the belief that it "would never be noticed?" NEVER! You would consider your self defamed before the entire com munity, and would paw up the earth in your bellowings. You would be only too quick to concede that every line in the paper is read. Yes, advertising certainly pays. There is no ad so small, or insig nificant, but what some one is wait ing for it. There are plenty of people who want what you have to sell, but they are weary ot looking through a hay- stack for a needle. They find it in an advertisement. And they will look in the local pa per tor tne ad. They will find some one's but will it be yours.
