FDR conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action with the enemy near Varennes, France, 26 September, 1918. During an operation against enemy machine gun nests west of Varennes, Lieutenant Call, then corporal, was in a tank with an officer when half of tht turret was knocjeed off by a direct artillery hit. Choked by gas from the high explosive shell, he left the tank and took cover in a shell hole thirty yasds away. Seeing that the officer did not fellow, god thjokbg that he might be alive, Corporal Call detuned to tht tank under irer machine-gun and fhtfl fire and carried the officer over a mile under machos-gun and sniper fire to safety.
