CALL, DONALD M. (10275) 2nd Lieutenant, (then
Corporal) Co. B, Bin. Tank Corps.
FDR conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above
and beyond the call of duty in action with the
enemy near Varennes, France, 26 September, 1918.
During an operation against enemy machine
gun nests west of Varennes, Lieutenant Call, then
corporal, was in a tank with an officer when half of
tht turret was knocjeed off by a direct artillery hit.
Choked by gas from the high explosive shell, he
left the tank and took cover in a shell hole thirty
yasds away. Seeing that the officer did not fellow,
god thjokbg that he might be alive, Corporal Call
detuned to tht tank under irer machine-gun and
fhtfl fire and carried the officer over a mile under
machos-gun and sniper fire to safety.
