Mr. H. G. Scarboro a Montgomery
county citizen who is interested in the
history of his county has written In
terestingly in last week's Mont
s;omerian. Many of our readers will
be interested in the article which fol
lows:
On the 31st day of March 1843 the
court house at Lawrenceville was
burned, and with it all the records of
the countv were destroyed, save one
book, accidentally left in an attorney's
room at the McKae Hotel. I his wr.s
a terrible calamity to the county. All
the pending suits had to be revived
and witnesses had to reprove meir
tickets with frreat confusion and conU
At this time there was considerable
agitation and excitement as to the lo
cation of the new county seat neaier
the center of the county. The commis
sioners first selected White Oak

took a vote of the county. A
majority voting in favor of the loca
tion at West Old field, where Troy
court house now stands, The court
house and jail was completed in 1840 1
and the recoids were moved to iroy
In August 1840. The Hon.' Thomas
Settle presided at the first term of
court in the new building' and Robert
Strange was solicitor.
