Republican new spa pers smile at the idea of Pinchot's victory over thp Old Guard in Penn sylvania being a slap at the adminis tr;tion: they sneered at the same claim when Beveridge defeated New m Indiana, and they tried to appeur unconcerned over llrookhart's :!. i in Iowa. Each of these ru-imarics indicated the overwhelming dissatisfaction of Republicans who are heartily dis gusted with the present administra tion and Congress, but none of them tarries such utter and complete repu diation, as exemplified in the Senate today, as does the defeat of Senator Porter .1. McCumber. Through the operation of the seni ority rule the senior Senator from North Dakota had become chairman of the finance committee, a distinction never before held by a western states representative. It is almost incon ceivable that a state should relinquish the honor and power which goes with the most important post in congress, jet McCumber was defeated for re nomin.ition.
