Most Become Militantly Liberal to Hold Gains Made. Clinton, Mass., Nov. 22. Senator David I. Walsh, as chairman of the Democratic senatorial committee, in a statement here, said that the election was not so much a Democratic victory as a rebuke to "stand-pat and retro active forces now in control of the na tional policy." "I am inclined," 'he said, "to re gard the result of the election as somewhat in the nature of a passive political revolution. It indicates wide spread dissatisfaction and discontent expressed by the electorate against the only agency in their government hich ! they could protest the present admin-1 instration. 1 "ihe people have emphatically re jected the promiscuous bestowal of subsidies and bounties through ta rill" protection to the few at the expense! of the many; a post-bellum tax pro-1 gram which shifts tax burdens from big .business to small business and ' from the wealthy to the impoverished. in many eastern states ana in deed to a considerable extent through out the middle west there seems to be a marked tendency to resent the re striction of perspnal liberty which the Volstead act, imposes. "The Republican leadership is so constituted that there is little chance of any lessons being learned from the election returns. Tlie farmers, the working classes, the salaried group and the small manufacturers and mer chants are determined to rid their government of the domination of the reactionary and predatory interest. This in part is the explanation of the situation in the west where the issue is rapidly becoming one between radi cals and conservatives rather than be tween liberals and conservatives. "I hope in view of the election that the Democratic party may become the militantly liberal party so that we shall have a strong conservative and a strong liberal party rather than two parties which the people unfortunately are inclined to believe merely to have different degrees of conservatism. The absence of strong liberal leadership in the Democratic party in some western states in the past has almost exter minated the party in those states. "The Democratic party can save the present situation and be restored to power in 1924 by asserting a sound liberal philosophy, and that course I hope will be undertaken without de lay, as the Democratic party must be something more than a party of nega tion. Its splendid opposition to the Republican policies of the last con gress showed its capabilities and sym pathies with the masses." Postmasters Expect Rush at Christmas Almost before we see the "Do Your Christmas Shopping Early," comes the plea from various city poiitofficos to "Post Packages Karly". The Greens boro postmaster stales that unless this is done, packages will be greatly delayeil for the work in that office even at this time is so crowded and congested, with the normal business that the clerks hardly have room for their work. Plans are being made for the establishment of additional stamp windows-in the postoffice lobby, and even then it is said they must nec essarily be delay. Probably conditions are hardly so crowded in some offices, but there is always delay about Christ mas mails for various reason.s, and after we "Shop Earlv", the next thing in order is to "Mail Early".
