Randolph Agricultural Department ’ E. S. MILLSAPS, JR., County Agent Office Days: Saturdays and First Mondays; * TeL 237 i The Greeter Randolph F^r Next week is Fair Week in Ran dolph. Will we all do our part It should be a matter of pride with the fanners of the county to bring out their products and to fairly represent the county. The manufacturing in terests of the county are again going to put on the made in Randolph show this year. It's up to us to,6how up the farming interests of the county, and we should do it in a big way as farming is the greatest industry of the county. Several farmers have definitely promised to put on Farm Displays at the fair and I still hope that there will be others that will decide at the last minute to put on these displays yet. In case you do please let me hear from you as soon as possible. If you cannot put ok a complete farm display you can certainly help a out jpith the main exhibit by putting in the things that you do have. We * are moving this display out into the center aisle this year where it can be seen better and we hope that it will be well worth looking over. Let’s all get together on this and resolve that the farming interests of the county will be all that they should be at the fair this year. An added feature this year will be a special tobacco display. In addition | to the premiums offered in the cata log, there will be premiums of $7.50 and $4.00 for the best display of three hands each of four different grades of tobacco. A special booth will be used for the tobacco display and we hope to be able to take care of the tobacco so that it will not be j damaged. In the past this has been one of the main reasons that tobacco farmers have not shown their to bacdo. Another special feature m tne farm crops division this year will be a judging contest of farm crops and seeds. Any farmer or'his wife can enter this contest. The one making the highest score in this contest will be awarded $10.00 in Gold. This fea ture is being added this year with the hope of causing more interest in iden tifying the crops that are immediate ly around our very doors. There will be nothing in the contest that does not grow in the county. It will be well for all who intend trying this contest to be studying up on grasses and weeds around the farm. Poultry Show There are more fine bred chickens in the county this year than ever be fore, but how are the people who want to*buy them to find it out unless we show them. Don’t just say, well there are better chickens than mine in the county and not bring yours. Many, many farmers have said that and then come to the fair and after them out and let the judge decide who has the best In that case if you lose you will know where you can get breeding stock another year. If yours are the beet the other fellow will want some of yours. Bring them along. Cattle Show I have already said a lot about the cattle show, but really I think that ft is up to the breeders of the county to show the rest of the farmers of the county what they have in the way of good cattle and especially Guernseys. It is a well known fact that Randolph county is rapidly coming to the front as a Guernsey stronghold and we should bring them out. There are some 80 odd Guernsey bulls in the county and we should haye twenty or twenty-five of them at the fair. Don’t wait on the other fellow to do what you should do yourself. We are hop ing to have five or six complete herds at the fair but we also want as many individual entries as possible. I real ize that you do not have any for sale at this time, but you may have some p later so why not let the other fellow know that you are in the game and at the same time do a good piece of (By Edgar A. Guest) Would you have missed them, a kind word or two Is he better or worse for his meeting with you? What matters his station, what mat ters ,his dress? his care or increase Did you Did you wish him good luck as he went on his way ? Whenever he thinks of you what does he say? What if he wasn’t a man of your - style, Would it have hurt you to give him a smile? Am you the better for being unkind? How did you greet him that day at add to Did you add t his hate? He thinks the world selfish, he says it is cold, He vows tiwt men serve only idols of >n his way still dia led sore? us queer notions of all do \ ■ ", -■ >! ■ meanness, and pointing I • boosting for Old Randolph, the best County in the State. There should also be several grade herds at the fair this year. While we hope to get as many people as pos sible interested in registered cattle we must recognize the importance of the grade cow and as much emphasis has been placed on her this year as on purebreds by making the premiums the same on both. We hope for an overflowing barn in the cattle depart ment tiiis year. Swine Department There is very little use for me to waste words in saying that we have sadly neglected this department in the past. Outsiders who visited our fair last year said it was good, but that we did not have the livestock on ex hibit that we should have. Let’s bring out our hogs as well as our cattle this year and fairly represent our county. When we fail to show our livestock we are giving out to the general public the wrong impression of the industry of the county. It may not seem to us at the time that we received enough premiums to pay us for our time and trouble, but we must remember that when we are helping the county as a whole that we are also helping ourselves. It should be a matter of personal pride with each and every farmer in the county to make the County Fair just as good as he or she can possibly do. If each of you will do that this year there is no doubt of the kind of fair that we will have. In other words we will have the best fair in the state this year and I see no reason why we cannot do so. Let’s try. 1IN MISMUKX ' William E. Beck was bom Aug. 10, 1848, died Aug. 8, 1927, at the home of his son, Ben. He was 78 yrs., 11 mo. and 28 days old. On July 30, 1874 he was married to Alice F. Wil liams, who preceded him to the grave in 1895. To this union were bom seven boys and one girl, of whlbh six are living and two dead. The living are: Eli and Robert Beck, of Ashe boro; Ben and Earl Beck, of Erect; Rufus Beck, of Carthage; and Minnie Suggs, of Ether. In 1896 he was married the second time to Francena Craven who pre ceded him to the grave in 1924. To this union were bom one girl and two boys, Ada Beck, of Ether; Charlie Beck, of High Point; and Ernest Beck, of Siler City. He had three sisters, all of whom are dead; and one broth er, John Beck, who is still living. He had thirty-five grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was a member of Riverside Baptist ehurch. His health had been declining for a long time and he had been sick for two months but hot confined until on Sunday morning, Aug. 7, he was taken seriously ill and the death angel came and took him home on Monday morning, Aug. 8, where sickness, sorrow, and death can never dome. He told his brother a short time before his death that he was ready and willing to go, and had told his children to not grieve after he was gone for he would be better off. His request the evening before his death to his children was to have engraved on his tombstone the fol lowing words: "Saved by Grace”. Six of his granddaughters were the flow er girls, six of his grandsons were the pall bearers. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. C. Kidd, of Bennett, and his remains were laid to rest in Christian Union cemetery. How sad it is to give up father, how, oh, how we will miss him, just to know we can never see him on earth no more. But the great consolation is of the blessed hope of meeting him again where death can come no more.—His chil dren.
