Sunday, October 16, 1927 EXPOSING OFFICIAL COR i RUPTION Golden Text: “Be sure your sin will find you out.” (Num. 32 : 23b). <1 Kings 21:6-10, 16-20.) 5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? 6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, 1 will not give thee my vineyard. 7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the king dom of Israel ? Arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were iu his city, dwelling with Naboth. 9 And she wrote in the letters, say ing, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people; 10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme -God and the king: and then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die, 16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vine yard of Naboth the Jezreelite. to take possession of it. 17 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah, the Tishbite, saying, 18 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the . vineyard of Na both, whither he is gone down to possess it. 19 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession ? And thou shalt speak unto him, say ing, Thus saith the Lord, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Na both shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. 20 And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee; be cause thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. Ahab was anxious for the vineyard of Naboth that he may have this ad dition to his summer palace. He of fered to buy it with money or give him another. This did not suit Na both as he wanted to keep the one he had, first it was an inheritance, sec ond it .was illegal under the Jewish statutes. If this were the end of the matter, well it would have been, but he was hurt to think that any would refuse him anything, so he was sad and would not*eat. Jezebel only car ried out the wishes of Ahab when she promised she would give him the vine yard. He allowed her to use his name and seal in her corruption. She was able to work a perfect plan and it meant the execution of Naboth. But we must remember that it is impos sible to commit sin without suffering for it It is very easy today to get false witnesses but they will pay heavily for their falsehoods. They had the fast, Naboth was ac cused and stoned so that he died. Things began to look good to Ahab, so he goes down to take possession of Naboth’s vineyard. Sooner than he expected was he called to give an Trinity News Beautiful Old Box Bush At The Spencer Place Sold. Trinity, Oct. 10.—Mr. and Mrs. Hill, of West Trinity, have sold their nice bungalow and are going to move elsewhere. Mr. Webb Meredith is having the finishing touches put to his house by Johnson and Payne, well known painters of this section. Mrs. Dred Peacock, of High Point, was in town Friday afternoon. Miss Kate Craven, who has been spending the summer at her home here, has returned to Durham for the winter. Mr. Crowson, of the Gilead section of Randolph, a brother of our towns man, Mr. Walter Crowson, has bought a lot on North Main, and expects to build in the near future and live in Trinity. The place known as the Elias Lohr place, on an eminence overlooking Trinity has been repaired, and makes quite a nice appearance from our main street. The place fs now owned by Mr. Reid Younts. The beautiful old box bush where the Spencers now live was sold to some one in High Point, or near there, a few days since, for a good price. This box bush was a beautiful specimen of its ldnd. Mr. E. P. Wilson and Mr. Robert Leiqon Johnson, of Durham, spent a few hours at the home of Mr. John Younts Saturday afternoon. They were accompanied by Mr. Elwbod Johnson and his bride, who before her marriage was Miss Ada Bennett, of High Point. Mr/and Mrs. J. W. Mooney and children, of High Point, visited Mr. and Mrs. John Younts Sunday. James b. Branson. Dies At His Home Near Staley James L. Branson, aged 62 years, died at his home near Staley Saturday an illness lasting two lived in the commun died all his life, hav »d in farming. He had rrhSu“;„5 a!} Mrs. account for the deed he had approved of. There are a great number of peo ple left that the Lord can depend up on to do hie work. Elijah goes down with a message from God. Oh today how we need brave men to take God’s message at any cost to the highs as well as the low. It is easy for us to jump on the ones that are already down, but how slow are we to expose those who are higher up but corrupt. If Ahab had known that in the very vineyard he would have been found and reproved would he have done as he did? Yes. We know our sins will find us out and in this knowledge we go and commit sin. Those who, in our present industrial and commercial system of life, are guilty of crimes against their em ployees for the sake of profits would do well to remember that a curse rests upon gains gotten through in justice. The obligation to speak out against evil, whether in high, places or in low, finds emphasis in this les son. Ahab’s dissatisfaction proved very costly to him. If we could learn that it is better to lay up treasures in heaven than on earth we would have learned a great lesson. I think we are under moral obligation ~to expose any corruption that we know is be ing practiced. Farmer News Former Resident Undergoes Operation In High Point. Clay assisted the local preacher in a meeting at Locust Grove school house last week. Mrs. Van Cranford is teaching in the Gray’s Chapel school again this year. She spends the week-ends at home. The Early Bird (Monroe Journal) Making' note of the efforts of Judge Bowie, Johnson McCall, T. L. Kirk patrick and Tom Jimison, the Chath am Record says: An A1 Smith club has been form ed at Charlotte. It includes some strong men, but is likely to do Smith more harm than good, as it is too early to press the candidacy of Smith in this state. In the negro minstrel the end man brings up the question of the early bird to the slow-minded darkey who is answering the questions. “You know,” he said, “that the early bird catches the worm?” “He do.” says the slow wit, “den what do he do wid it?” The boys have organized, now what are they going to do with the organi zation ? Nothing. As the Record says, the time for such an organization has not arrived. Smith strategy would be to keep still and let the other folks do the talking till they get tired. To talk Smith now only agitates them the more. By and by they would get tired themselves if nobody prodded them.
