Randolph Agricultural Department E. S. MILLSAPS, JR., County Agent Office Days: Saturdays and First Mondays; TeL 237 , Feed MUk Cow. Now All oyer the county farmers are telling me that their cows are dropp ing off hr milk. The main reason for this dropping off at this season is that, the most of you get busy with your fall work and neglect your cows. That is you just let them run in the pastures ahd figure that they should get all they need to eat until frost comes.' This allows the cows to fall off in milk and makes it extremely hard to ever get them bask in a full flow of milk until grass comes in the spring. The reason for this is very evident when we stop to think about it seri ously. As the cool weather comes on the grass begins to dry up whether frost? has come or not. The sap goes down and the cows are not able to get the food value from it that they were during the more rapid growing sea son. When this condition starts we should begin to feed our cows some hay. In fact give them all the hay at night that they will clean up. We must realize that we will not have any more succulent feed until grass comes again and that if we let them fall off that it is practically impossible to get them back where they were before. If we all had silos and had plenty of insilage it would be different, but the most of us have not gotten that far along yet. However I believe that there are several farmers in the coun ty today that would be better able to care for their cows with the use of silos and at the same time feed them more economically than they are doing at present. Feed the cows all the dry feed that they will consume and along with it give them one pound of concentrates to every three pounds of milk they producer Just keep in mind that dairy products bring better prices dur ing the winter months than in the summer and also that you have more time to work with the cows during the winter than you do during the sum mer. Properly cared for the cow will furnish a nice income during the win ter when you will not be able to real ize anything from any other source on the farm. Butter fat is steadily go ing up as well as other dairy products which should make it more attractive to the producer. More CewB Needed Many farmers over the county have their barns fuller with good feed than ever before. In fact far more feed than the cattle now on the farm can consume. I feel that right now is the best time for farmers in that condi tion to buy cows. Many farmers who do not produce much feed are ready to sell their eows in the fall and then buy again in the spring. Therefore we should be better able to buy cows within the next sixty days than we will bs able to do nekt spring. Also you will be able to get them In much better condition now than you will be able to get them sixty or ninety days from now after they have been half fed through the winter months. If you are interested in baying cows now either pure-bred or grades I would like to talk the matter over with you. It is possible that we can work together to the mutual advant age of all in securing the eows that are needed. Last Call for Pyratel As I have stated before we will not be able to get any of the Government Explosives after this fall. If yoa wash t Our Practical Pattern No. 1157 1 Juit imagine how smart yon*M look i this tfcve^nort dress—if you ,ake it np the hew .port aterials with » stripped vested ,^-y: any of this material please let me have your checks at once. The price is $6.00 per case of 60 lbs. 1 am sorry that I cannot see every farmer in the county about this matter or write to him personally but that c&n’t be done so do not lay the paper by and forget it if you are interested.
