The convention yesterday was
the largest ever held in Western

any occasion than on yesterday
We hope to see at least two

ITon. Tjtc York, the Republi

About fifteen members of the

We extend to them a hearty wel

pleasant and profitable to them.
There is to be a grand dress ball
at the Swannanoa hotel to-night,
and we no doubt that all who at

ed upon by the young people 'with
much interest. Visitors, especial-,

Senator Vance and Gov. Jar
vis spoke at New Berne Friday
night. The Journal says, Hon.
Z. B. Vance for about two hours
held his audience in breathless
attention—breathless from two
causes, eagerness to hear, and
laaghod out of wind. The Gov
ernor delivered one of his point
ed speeches in. which every word
went to the spot aud will tel) in
the approaching election. The
Governor says we have 40;000
majority in the State and the
way to get it is to organize and
see that every man votes.
The largest Congressional con
vention that has ever assembled
west of tlie Blue Ridge met In
the opera hali in this city yester
day at 12 o’clock. A finer look
ing body does not often assemble
anywhere. The number of spec
tators was also quite lal-ge.
The convention was called to
order by M. E. Carter, Chairman
of the 9th Congressional District
Executiv-' Committee. On open
ing the -f^n^ynLiou he made a
short, ' and tim’el;5’7
speech, urging thatYhe very best
harmony should prevail. He
spoke of our National and State
ticket aud predicted a triumphant
victory for the Democracy in
November next. The convention
then being declared ready for
business, the Secretary pro tern.
Mr. R. Furman read the roll of
counties, all of which were repre
sented.
On motion of Mr. Richmond
Pearson one delegate from each
county was chosen to act on the
committee, on organization and
also one member on credentials.
The motion was carried.
W^hile the committee was out
Gen. T. L. Clingman was called.
He responded in a hajipy style in
a few well suited remarks. Mr.
J. M. Gudger and Col. Davidson
also made remarks.
The committees returned and
submitted their reports, which
were adopted with an amend
ment to the the report on cre
dential which admitted contest

and their music was pronounced
by many to be as fine as they ever
