Fine rain yesteaday and the farmere rejoice. The Convention meets this a. in., at 9 o’clock. Many new subscribers to the Advance yesterday. The convention yesterday was the largest ever held in Western North Carolina. The Asheville Cornet Band never did itself more honor on any occasion than on yesterday We hope to see at least two hundred of our citizens out to hear Gen. Scales at Marshall next Monday. Our readers will over-look the the scarcity of news in to-day’s Advance, the convention oc cupied our time and space. Mr. O. M. Saddler, superintend ent of the Southern Express Com pany and Mr. J. W. Crossman, route agent of the Air Line com pany is in the city. ITon. Tjtc York, the Republi can candidate for Governor was in the city yesterday and returned last evening to meet his appoint ment with Gen. Scales at Newton lo-moivow. ' About fifteen members of the Georgia Press Association will ar rive here this evening, and will remain a day or two in the city, We extend to them a hearty wel come and hope their stay in our mountain city may be both pleasant and profitable to them. There is to be a grand dress ball at the Swannanoa hotel to-night, and we no doubt that all who at tend will spend a pleasant eve ning, as these occasions are look ed upon by the young people 'with much interest. Visitors, especial-, ly tae ladies are cordially invited. Senator Vance and Gov. Jar vis spoke at New Berne Friday night. The Journal says, Hon. Z. B. Vance for about two hours held his audience in breathless attention—breathless from two causes, eagerness to hear, and laaghod out of wind. The Gov ernor delivered one of his point ed speeches in. which every word went to the spot aud will tel) in the approaching election. The Governor says we have 40;000 majority in the State and the way to get it is to organize and see that every man votes. The largest Congressional con vention that has ever assembled west of tlie Blue Ridge met In the opera hali in this city yester day at 12 o’clock. A finer look ing body does not often assemble anywhere. The number of spec tators was also quite lal-ge. The convention was called to order by M. E. He spoke of our National and State ticket aud predicted a triumphant victory for the Democracy in November next. The convention then being declared ready for business, the Secretary pro tern. Mr. R. Furman read the roll of counties, all of which were repre sented. On motion of Mr. Richmond Pearson one delegate from each county was chosen to act on the committee, on organization and also one member on credentials. The motion was carried. W^hile the committee was out Gen. T. L. Clingman was called. He responded in a hajipy style in a few well suited remarks. Mr. J. M. Gudger and Col. Davidson also made remarks. The committees returned and submitted their reports, which were adopted with an amend ment to the the report on cre dential which admitted contest ing delegates. The committee on Merrimon, J.
