Second, That desirable cus tomers cannot be gained by the oft-tried practice of some deal ers in cutting! prices on a few leading articles, hoping to make it up on something else. That hard work and close ap plication to business is the price of success. ! I That' our business for 1889 shows an increase over the pre vious year of 20 per cent., which is very gratifying, and for which we wish to thank our many friends in Asheville and Western North Carolina. Looking Forward We are encouraged to enter up on the year before us with re newed energy and a determina tion ito erivd our customers the benefit of, our increased facili ties for buying and selling the very finest goods to be had, at small profits. Concerning the trial and acquittal of Mrs. Morris, charged with the murder of her husband, the Statesville Landmark has this to say: j j "The verdict rendered was the one expected, owing to the weakness of the State's testimon-, but it is nevertheless said that the overwhelming public senti ment at Reidsville is that the widow is guilty. She may be but the Landmark has all the while been on her side; it couldn't help it; it's just built that way, and it rejoices at her acquital. Mr. Mor ris' sudden and mysterious death is greatly to be deplored for he is said to have been a good man and a useful: citi zen, But this talk about hanging young and pretty girls won't do." ; There have been ances as this in the several such utter- State press, and a young lawyer of Charlotte upon seeing the photograph of the accused, declared himself willing to do anything in his power for her upon the strength of her physical beauty We venture to think this is carrying gallantry a little bit too far. As Ions as physical beauty in woman is associated with gentleness and purity the service of man should be absolute j to death, but when it is contaminated by vice and crime admiration becomes gross arid de grading, j We do not judge Mrs. Morris, but merely answer a question which we hear with surprise from one of usually such unerring taste and ) judgement as the editor of the Landmark. 5 We would respectfully commend those holding such views j of I gallantry to a study of the life of that splendid type of the English gentleman, Henry Esmond, his unfortunate passion fpr the brilliant Beatrix and its instantaneous subsidence when she was contaminated by the flat teries of a Prince.
