HUNT RETURNS. X X X PIAXOS AND Complimentary Resolutions. We were pleased io meet Col. H. C. Hunt on our streets, who has just re turned ffom California, where he went on government" business. In answer to our enquiry as to the business he was called upon to performhe said : President Harrison appointed Messrs. Q Q- S D. W. Shyock of Pennsylvania, John W. Lewis of iventucKy, and mysen, a com The public are invited to call and examine mission to go to Round Valley, Califor nia to appraise certain lands which were situated within one oi the Indian reservations, but which have been occu pied by whites and improved by the lat- ter. There are aDoui i,wu acres in volved. The object of the government Is to get the whites off, so the Indians can have these lands and be by them selves. Our instructions were that should our instruments before purchasing. ia stock such makes as e carry FISCHER, ESTIEY A nd other makes. Don't f att-,lo give us a call before buying- an Instrument, at No. 37 our appraisement be approved by the Tatton avenue. Gay M. Williams & Co. Secretary of the Interior, he would ten der the money, and if not accepted he would send a military force and move Via wVittpa nff their own land. After this work was completed we were fur ther instructed to select a reasonable amount! of grazing and timber lands. There are over one hundred thousand acres in this reservation, over five thou sand of which are the finest grazing and timber lands I ever saw. "When the three commissioners met In "Washington preparatory to going to workithe other commissioners were not then ifeady to proceed "West, so we agreed to meet in San Francisco on the 20th of December last. Mr. Shyock and myself were there at the appointed time, but in the meantime I Mr. Lewis had declined the appointment. Mr. S. and myself were then ordered to proceed to Round Valley and wait until the third commis sioner should come. "While waiting about four weeks for the third commis sioner we devoted ourselves to examin ing the situation, and ascertaining the wishes of the people. We could "not have been treated better by any people. Mr. S. and myself agreed on a line for the reservation, which would have been satisfactory to both the whites and the Indians, but when Mr. Luther R. Smith, of the Interior Department, who was ap pointed the third commissioner, arrived, he and the Indian Agent proceeded to enlarge the boundary line beyond that agreed upon by 3Ir. S. and myself, which was adopted agaimt my protest. The people held indignation meetings, pro testing against this act of the commis sioners, and went so far as to burn the agent in effigy. The people also adopted the following: resolutions complimentary to col. n. c. hunt. Covelo, February 25, 1891. Col. II. C. Hunt Dear Sir : The citi zens of Round Valley take pleasure In presenting to yon, with their compli ments, a resolution adopted by Jhem at a meeting held in the town of Covelo on Monday evening, February 16, 1891 : resolution. That we have only words of praise and commendation for the dignified and in telligent attitude assumed by Colonel Hunt, and hope that no words deroga tory to him will be used in this matter. Again, at a meeting held Monday even ing, February 23d, the following was adopted: ! resolution. That it must be distinctly understood that in all our words of censure and con demnation for the action of this commis sion we make an exception of Colonel Hunt, who has shown himself firm in his integrity" and convictions of right, and proven himself worthy of our highest confidence, respect and esteem. j i II. S. Lovell, Chairman. iW. Henley, Secretary. i We are pleased to publish these reso lutions in justice to our townsman. CoL Hunt says he enjoyed his trip.
