City Attorney Cobb urged the employ ment of a city engineer whose reputation for such work is so established that it would not only insure good work, but would give confidence in the work. It was a timely and most important sugges tion, and we hope to Bet it carried out pecially all the Lecturers, in the unwrit ten work of the order. It is very important that a full attend ance be present, as a better system of lecturing in every county will be organ ized to aid in carrying on the educational interest of the Alliance. The State Medical Association met in this city Tuesday morning. A very large number of the physicians of the State are in attendance, and a splendid body of men it is. Mr. M. II. Fletcher, President of the iiuncombe County Medical Society, called the c invention to order. Prayer was offered by Rev. Mr. Byrd, of the Central Mi E. Church, South. In behalf of the local physicians and our citizens generally, Hon. Richmond Pearson delivered a cordial address of welcome, which was responded to on behalf of the Society by Dr L. J. Picot of Littleton, N. C. Dr. II. 11. Lewis, of Raleigh, President ot the Society, then delivered his annual a' dress, which was pronounced one of 1 before the Society.; It was referred to a committee consisting of brs. Bull, Way and Brown. The Society tnjojed a reception given complimentary to them by Dr. and Mrs. Voa Ruck, cn Tuesday evening. On Wednesday they dined at Oakland Heights banatorium, and to day they were taken on a special train to Hot Smintis where a banquet was tendered SALT, SODA, The Market House Again. Is it just to the property owners on the Square lo go around to Market Street or Spruce Street to enter the market House? For that is precisely what the present plan involves, whereas, a street on all sides would enable all citizens on the Square or west of Main Street to enter from either side 6f the court house. Besides, concentrating all the meat, hucksters and floral markets in one locality, as is contemplated, will necessa rily largely increase the people on the Square in going to the m'nrket house; and the danger of the fire department being called out at this time, when these streets v.ould be thus crowded with j the ablesj papers ever rea. women and children and vehicles, would ' Society. It was referred to certainly endanger life and property. And one life would be worth more than the entire market house with all its ap pertenances. With this fire department elsewhere would leate ample room for a street from the Square on the north side of the market, and thus giving convenient access from all points. We do not believe the plan as at present agreed upon will . tnem. be satifactory, and forty thousand dollars j 0ver nfty young physicians are in is far too much to spend in unsatisfactory, j attfcntiance for examination by the State j Out County Roads. On next Modav the justices of the county wiil meet with the county com miseioner to fix the tax levy for the I i i year, elect Judge, Solicitor and Clerk of the Criminal Court, and levy a tax for the improvement of the county roads. Of thU'road tax the Democrat wishes AyRTFT 1 lf 1 VFi & The tax should not be less than fifteen cents on the hundred dolUn of property. A first-class county superintendent of GRAHAM WAFERS, roadt, an engineer and practical w orking man, should be chosen, whose duty it should be to survey and fix tne grades and width ot the roads and superintend the construction of the roads. All the roads cannDt be made good in oneyear; but what is doue should be intelligently and permanently done. It will be economy in the end. It will take all the tax allowed by law to do good work, and even this is a low allowance. This load mailer is the uisi important duty the justices and commissioners will be called vn to do, and we irut it may receive such earr.est tuu caret ul consid eration as its importance demands. not to say unsafe, work. was a An Object-Lesson for AsheviUe.
