There seems to be a little lull in ing operations just now. build- The Asheville Gun Club was out prac ticing yesterday- afternoon. i " i' :1 Summer travel is picking up some on the Western Xorth Carolina Railroad. Every merchant and business man in Asheville should advertise in the Daily Six. A juvenile military company has ; been organized in this city with fifteen mem Ixrrs. J -'j If vou wish to see the enterprises in encourage I The attention of our readers is called to fcol -A nf TVt- riinrrman Starnes. He has located at f lael, two miles west of tht city, and offers his pro fessional services to the people of the community. The Johnston store rooms, southwest corner of Main street and the public square, are soon to be occupied by Dr. T. C. Smith, as a drug store, and Geo. T. Jones & Col, the,"Rackej: store." These are among the prettiest store rooms in North Carolina. If the officious and brainless chap, who placed anlunofficial sensational, and un authorized bulletin! on the Daily Sux bul letin board yesterday afternoon , would be more careful how j he meddles into other people's buisness and pay more strict attention to the matters he is em ployed to attend to, i ; would perhaps be better for him. i Any person contributing as much as ten dollars to the Asheville Light Infantry becomes an honorary member of that organization and h. thereby reliied from jury duty. This affords a splendid op portunity for those ofj our citizens who do not wish. to serve on the jury, to con tribute towards purchasing the new uni forms for the company. ; ) your city them. flourish vou must The Swannonoa 'bus has been Hand somely painted and looks like a brand new vehicle, j I Much fine popular lumber is no W; being placed on the line of YY. N. C. R. R., for shipment. Officer J. M. Rowan purchased a house and lot in Doubleday yesterday from J. II . McConncll. J There was considerable rain and hail on the Balsam, bevond Waynes ville yesterday evening. If vim wish to build ur a croou news- -- - A j paper in Asheville, subscribe for the Daily Si x and advertise in it. I Frank Loughran, wife and child, re turned from aii extended visit to Wash ington last evening. t Rev. Dr. J. L. Carroll has gone to Richmond, YaJ, where his son Mitchell graduates this week. I The people, and especially the republi cans, were anxious to hear the I news from Chicago yesterday. 1 I Capt. M. J. Fagg will leave this morn ing for Mount vaile Springs, Tenn., where he will spend about two" weeks. We have heard of one or two men in i this city who will support Fisk, the pro hibition canditatctor the Presidency. The regular communication of Ashe ville lodge No. 410 A. F. & A. M., will be held this evening. Work in the third de gree. Rev. Will II. Osborne, of this city, de livers the literary address at the j com mencement exercises of Judson College to-day. I ? i If you have not cleaned up your prem ises v ou had better look out, the officers will be after you. They have given v ou plenty of warning. Capt. Natt Atkinson returned last evening from Charleston, Swain county, where he has been on business connected with his real estate office. A. I). Cooper has several advertise ments in the Sux this morning. Read them and when you wish something nice and fresh, give him a call. F. II. Cameron, Inspector-General of the State Guards, will go out to Waynes ville this morning to inspect 'the Rich land Rifles, of that rilace. Three or four of the Sisters of Mercy from Hickory, arrived in the city last evening, preparatory to opening the school here early in July. The pension examining board, com posed of Drs. J. A. Burroughs, W. D. Hil liard and John I Icy Williams, examined several applicants forpensionsyesterday. The case, Reed vs. Redmond, which was taken up in the Superior Court yesterday morning, consumed the entire day. The case will be concluded this morning. The June bug disappears in June, The lightning bug in May ; The mosquito takes his bonnet off And says: "I've comeitd stay." The colored Teachers' Institute now in progress in this city, is well attended, in fact it is the most successful session that has been held here. ! It will close to-dav. . j There were big breaks at the Farmers' le article in the Sux yesterday morn in reference to the telephone matter, wa$ highly complimented by every per son we conversed jwith. s savei two, and thci were stockholders iii the Long com pany. The city council will j settle the matter to-morrowj night, aid we feel satisfied as to what the result will be. Thev cannot give an exclusive right to any one to put up an exchange , t j j j ; A Swimming Pool. (Why would not a swimming pool pay in this city? We believe that such an enterprise, fitted ud in good style, would be a paying institution, especially during the summer months. In Raleigh and other cities not much larger than Ashe ville, wc understand these smimming pools afford a great deal of pleasant amusement to the young people, and are a sorce of much revenue' to the owners. We hope some of our enterprising jpcople will inaugurate such an enterprise here. The cost of puttingjup the pool could not be very heavy, and we belie ve could be made to pay for itself the first season. t 1 ! j notlier Reminder. j There is a gentleman from Boston, Mass., now in Asheville negotiating for the purchase of a half or whole interest in a $21,000 tract of land, which is loca ted within half a mile ' of the corporate limits of the city. He says he likes Ashe ville better than any place he has visited. He has recently been through many of the Southern States prospecting, and is highly pleased with Chattanooga, Tenn. He says if the sewerage bonds are voted here he will complete his trade for the land, and will locate here and invest in other enterprises, but if the question is defeated, he has made up hii mind to locate at Chattanooga. He is a man (of considerable means and full of enterprise. Tlie Iuhlic Buildlnjf. When the question of the location for the Asheville public building has; been set tled and the preliminary work read y 1:0 be commenced, we would suggest that our people urge the government, and offer every inducement possible, to use in the construction of the building, our own Western North Carolina granite. If it can not be found of a sufficient quality and in quantities to suit near j the city, we know that there is the greatest abuu dance along the line of the Western N. C. railroad, and feel satisfied, from what we have learned, that the railroad company would offer most . excellent inducements in the way of freights. There is some as fine building stone near Asheville as can be found anywhere, and we think it would be nothing but right and proper that it should be used in the construction of this building. misincss is Itnsiness. Aii exchange alluding to the fact that people ask and expect so much free ser vice from newspaper publishers, when they would not think of making such de mauds upon business men, voices our sentiments exactly, and concludes thus ly: "Every line of space in a newspaper is worth money, and when people beg for space they beg for money. There are very many people, even intelligent; peo ple, wlio don't understand this. When they ask for the insertion of an article or a paragraph which is not interesting in itself, but intended to be in the interest of some institution, charitable or other wise, they often do so with an air of as surance that indicates that, in their opin ion, they are conferring a favor rather than asking one. If it were not for the rcharges made for space in a'newspaper it and the Banner warehouses yesterda3"fcouid not exist, and all advertising The tobacco was of a very fine quality, and was raised in Haywood and Yancey counties.. j Richmond Pearson, of this j city, and J.
