FOR VICE-PRESIDENT : ALLAN I G. TIIURMAX, of Ohio. DE.MOCRATIC STATE TICKET FOR GOVERNOR : DANIEL G. FOWLE, of Wake. : t : A PRACTICAL SUGGESTION. The Baltimore Manufacturers' 'j Record makes a good suggestion when, in speak ing of the large and profitable trade that is done in ornamental ?dried plants and grasses, it says: j : j "There is a certain market for, every thing new and pretty that has sufficient durability. In -no part of the world is there a greater variet of natural growths that meet these conditions than in the South. On' up lands and low lands, in forests and swamps are vines and weeds, palms, ferns and mosses that could be gathered, dried and marketed to the great profit of tf qse who did it. The more flexible the fibre, the more delicate and feathery the tracery, the more highly the grasses are appreciated." , The growths mentioned are 'used for decorative and ornamental purposes and are imported in large quantities for the end referred to. The philanthropist who will point out, particularly to the women and children of the country dis-. tricts of the South, how to avail theirf selves of the advantages of the industry suggested, will prove a benefactor indeed. The Record notes that the "vast store house of medicinal plants in the Appal achian belt had been there for centuries, known onlv to botanists, until the Wal Inces. of Statesville. made a market lor them and then sent a scientific herbalist to! instruct the wives and children of the mountaineers how to gather and prepare them." And as it insists, the industry first sug gested "and numerous other industries i ! i 1 can be commenced in a small way, and, managed thriftily, can be enlarged until they attain importance, and lead to inde pendence, if not to wealth." Trt -nvide -that the Aldermen of the Citjof Asheville may negotiate a loan of One Hun dred Thousand Dollars, for the use and bile fit of said city, as set forth in said ordinate : Be it ordained by the Board of Aldermei ot the City of Asheville, That for the purpos ot obtaining the consent of a majority ofjtne qualified and registered voters of the city vat the Board of Alderman of the said fcity flay borrow the sum of One Hundred Thousjnd Dollars, to be applied to the construction of a system of Sewerage, and other necessary and permanent improvements, an elector shall be held on Tuesday, July the 10th AJ D. 1888 at the usual voting place, andtmde&ne rules and regulations governing such electpns in said city; and if the consent of the required majority shall be obtained at such election, then the Board of Aldermen may borrow aid sum of money upon the bonds of the saidfity to be made and issued, in their discretion in the denomination of Fifty, One Hundred and Five Hundred Dollars, with interest coufons attached, ! The that the most stupendous lie he had ever tbne of the address shows that William heard had just cminatcd from the Chica go Convention, where it had been declar ed that the democratic partv had never forfeited airy of the land grants. The Railway Age, of Chicago shows; that southern progress in the matter of railroad building, as well as in some the Emperor declares, other matters that might be mentioned, is in advance of all the rest of the coun try. It has compiled the number of miles of railway built in the United States irom the lirst ot January ; to the: first of June of the present vcar, making the to tal 2,271, and shows that about (one half of the whole was I in the States of this section, distributed j as follows! Vir ginia and West Virginia, S9 miles; North Carolina, G2; South Carolina, So; Geor gia, 195; Florida, 59; j Alabama, l4G; Mississippi, 19; Louisiana, CO; Tennes see, 111; Kentucky, 132; Arkansas, 35; Texas, 117; total, 1,110. This a show ing that should encourage us all. because railroad building means general progress,-! general development, general improve ment of values, numistakablv. 1 lie Oilcloth Association has rccentlv issued a circular, to the trade, establish ing a schedule of prices which must be maintained by dealers not only for the pool manufacturers, but for all others; and a bribe is ofierred in the shape of a rebate on puichascs from the associa tion concerns to be paid back at the end of the season. Anyone failing to main tain the monopoly prices will not! only not receive the benefit of the rebate! but will not thereafter be supplied with goods at any price by members of the Association. This is intended to freeze out all independent manufacturers and to place retail dealers completely at the mercy of the monopoly, and is a fair il lustration of the offensive and oppressive character which trust monopolies are assuming. The effect upon consumers will be to compel them to pay an artifi cial and exhorbitant price for one of the commonest articles of household iise. II, is less solicitous 'for 'the prosperity of ms empire ana lor tne peace ot tne Con tinent than for military traditions and for the opportunity for distinction in the profession of butchery which is opened to lnm by his inheritance of the powers which his father wielded, too briny, in so vyise and liberal a spirit. "A firm and inviolable attachment to the war lord," is an inheritance handed down from father to son, and from generation to generation." To every American worthy to 'bear the name this is sickening rodomantade. It awakens a fueling of pity not 'unmixed with con tempt for a people who can listen in pa tience to this sort of prating from an ar rogant youth who has never given the slightest proof of personal worth or wis dom or of fitness to administer the great trust which untoward accidents have committed into his hands.
