STRUDWICK, I of 0- ZZIZT ' ! The Woman's Christian Temper- I - TTnU hold its first meetinir on S Thursday last, under its new board of officers, j It hopes to enter with j new zeal and energy on its work of j enlightening public sentiment in re- rard to the evils of the liquor train c. of so educating the young that they shall not become the victims of evil habits, and rescuing, if possible, those already- enslaved from the de struction that awaits them. In the war of the saloon against the home thev hope to awaken the interest of conscientious voters so that no man may hope to hold office who is not for the home against the saloon, whether he be in Congress, in the Legislature, or in the city council. The story of the Crusade is one of thrilling interest. Though few may remember its details, none who read newspaper in the winter of 1S7S will fyrget with what anxiety they watched the progress of that movement so evidently of God. In the autumn of that year it crystal ized into The Woman's Christian Temperance Union, now the largest body of organized women in the world, with a membership of over two hundred thousand. Young Women's Christian. Tem perance Unions have become pop ; ular within the last few years and ' bid fair to eclipse in good results the mother union.1 Our bright young girls with their beauty, their vivacity, their enter tainments with music and flowers can excite interest where older ones have tried in vain. , The young ladies of Asheville who believe in Temperance should at once send names to the Secretary of the Y. W. C. T. U. which was organized last week, and help the success of this new factor in social life which will be a long needed bond of union among the thought ful young people of our town. These unions are usually called the Y's. All wise young men may become honorary members by sign ing the pledge and paying the membership dues. We jhave 'no criticism to make on Mr. Walker the Prohibition candi- i date for Governor in this State, lie is a reputable gent eman and a good 'speaker; but ; Prohibitionists can not afford. to vote For him for two reasons: .First, the Democrat ic party of North Carolina has thus far given all of the legislation that the temperance peoplej have asked for touching the questions of Prohi bition Second, to. vote for Mr. Walker is simply to throw a vote away.1 There is no ho pe of electing him, and every temperance Demo crat who votes for hirrj is helping the Republican candidate just that much.1 Suppose enojigh temper ance Democrats should vote for Walker to defeat Fowje, then what would be the result? jWhy, the ne gro element in North Carolina would then be in power. Could Prohibitionists in that bvent expect any thing from the negroes? Are not nine-tenths of therji anties? Do the Prohibitionists want to aid in putting-tile liquor voting negroeon top in the Old North ptate? We I The New York "ribune," the official organ of the Radical party in the Nation, a few days ago gave its readers the following in his edi- j. j torial columns:.
