Ry Capt. S. B. Alexander, Pres ident State Alliance of North Carolina. In all the States in which the farmers' alliance has Ijeen.organizcd, except Texas,, it is comparatively a new organization. The rapidity with which it . has been orcanized has astonished every one, and it is ! unreasonable to exiect that its members could" comprehend the full scop of this grand organization with the limited opportunities af forded them. The first section of the declaration of principles is misun derstood by more of. our members than any of the others caused by newspapers and persons not mem bers of our order, designedly or othewise. We frequently see state ments like the following: "The al liance must not' go into politics." "Keep the alliance out of politics." "Politics must not be discussed in the alliance." etc. etc. Rice, sugar, wool, and potatoes may be political topics one year, and the next their placet may le supplied by other farm products-. To hold that the al liance can ntit d'scuss laws or pro posed laws that affect their interests is to deprive our members of the inalienable right of self-protection. The first section of the declaration of principles reads as. follows: "P. To labor for the education ol the agricultural elassses-in. the sci ence of economical government in a strictly non-partisan spirit." , This declaration makes it the du ty of alliances to. consider any laws or proposed measure that will eith er benefit or discriminate against the agricultural classes. This must -be done in "a strictly non-partison spirit," the object of the-alliance being to educate it members "in the science of economical govern ment," so they cant vote intelligent ly, and.'not depend" upon the "taffy" of political speakers or the "one sided tracts of political literature." The ballot is the great protector of the people and unless our members investigate the laws under which we live and consider the changes pur posed from time to time their ignc rance will render them an easy pray to the educated politician, and they will be herded and driven by the political whip like the uneducated negroes of the South. "Knowledge is power," "Intelligence rules," "Money is influence," are- proverbs of great significance. Knowledge, intelligence aud money humanely directed arc great blessings--to man kind, but governed by rapacity they debauch the ballot and organ ize lobbies that procure the enact ment of laws that make the rich richer and tlie- poor' poorer. "No force can arise except bv the expen. ditureof a pre-existing force." So 110 class can become rich bv leisla- ition except by defrauding other u - lasses. .Mononolies. trusts., com 1 bines and pools flourish tri-dav to a ! greater degree thaiv ever: before in tlie world's history.
