The eastbound train, Monday, met with what nrpfnt have been a terribly fatal accident about a, mile this Hide of Wilniot and ten mile east of here. The train was' a long one and was drawn bv thy ( ! Tlie 'tender and loun tains j two empty Hats were jiiled on top. J- C. Cogdill was up from Bush j j of the caboose and two loaded box j nell, Wednesday. j ; ('nr-; were also thrown from the rails ami pa-rtly wrecked. 1 he l,re:lbig of a coupling, saved the balence of the train and aside from a slight shaking up, t he passengers suffered no inconvenience. As soon as tlmne in the coaches could recover themselves, ; they hastened to the engine and there beheld a truly wonderful sight. The ponderous machine had plung ed straight into the river and stood there, right side up half buried iii the water, hissing a vigorous pro test. Engineer Boyd and his lire man, Young, were still in the cab imprisoned by the- wrecked tender and Hats but alive. They wer released from their uncomfortable position as quickly as possible and were found to lie but little injured' Mr. Boyd s left hand was badly m met: in the nalni near the tiurmb. dt is hoped no bones are broken, but the hand was so badly swollen when a, physician came to examine it he could not tell for certain. Mr. l oung wasat-iirs thought to be seriously injured. I was reported here that one thigh ! was fractured and we were .pleased to see him on Tuesday's train abler to get about though stiff md sore from his bruises. The injure' men were taken to Hillsborough as soon as possible and cared for. Work on the wreck! -was begun at once and although lite night was dark and stormy, the uninjured cars were at Hillsborough by o o' clock the next morning. Engineer Boyd is well aware of the flimsy condition of some of the road down this way and exercises extreme care in running his trainl At the time of the accident he was running slowly or the wreck might have been much worse. j By some means, the- Asheville wire was down and communication could be had with the dispatchers oflice, so that the two trains were obliged to stay theretill after noon. We are glad the wreck was no worse' ami hope it will stimulate the company to make the road safe and. secure. It is rumored that a new time table for the Murphy Branch will go into operation early in October. Among other chauges it is hoped the trains will run over to Westfield and it is even talked that a freight train will be run down as far as here. We hope these rumors may prove well founded, The First Step. Perhaps you are run down, can't cat, can't sleep, can't think, ean'jt do anything to your satisfaction, and you wonder what ails yoii. A new and1 vigorous life has just been infused into the much talked I of line from here to Franklin, and if our jieople and the jxxiplc of Macon will examine the plan care fully thev will discover in it evcrv reijuircment of a popular move ment. It does not interest a few only; it offers opportunities to all. Itdoesnotpropo.se. that these twoj counties vote money to build aT road that will be managed in New I . 1 York or whose earnings will leave t us to go into the ocketf of a stranger, but it proposes that the stock Khali he hem by our own people, that the shares shall le of small enough denominations to be within reach of all and that those who have not the ready cash can pay for them in such work as any one can do, cutting tres, taking small contracts for grading, fur nishing timber for bridges, trestles etc. " To those owning land along the Franklin road, it means everything. To others it means that the mer chants can buy and sell their goods cheaper ami pay "more for farm produce and to all it means a road that we manage our.rlces. What interest does the W. N. C. take in the wants of this country? It is only a branch of the great Rich mond and Danville system. How much thought do-the high offieiais of that system give to the Huck town Branch? They are building it simply to gain and hold more valuable rights and this will al ways be the case when wc tie our selves down to companies whose interests are not our interests. Our. Macon county friends worked for and were sure they had secured the building of the Rabun Gap road, but unfortunately the com panie's interests underwent a change and now their road is a shadow. Now give ywur attention to the plan as presented ton?. Mr. A. B. Allison has interested Mr. J. II. Barnard, of Asheville, who has had more experience in electrical roads than any other man wc know of south of Richmond ami he, ; after a casual survey of the worst part of the route, declares it per fectly practicable and much cheap er to build and operate than a steam road. Mr. Barnard is a large land owner and heavy tax payer in this county- and is as much interested as any of us in having our people take up the right enterprises and J cave the wrong ones alone, and although he took no interest in the matter previous to his present visit, he is in dead earnest now and. projioses to have a prelimina ry s-urvey for. route ami power stations made at once, so that defi nite estimates of cost and business may be formed. A rough guess at the cost of the road equipied and ready for business is 8300,000 and Mr. Barnard's figures on the cost of roadIed etc., are sulistaneiatcd by that veteran-contractor, Capt. A. F. Rice. For this sum, a steam road could not lx built nor could a steam road dcvelojie the country that the proposed road will. lccause all tlie gteam mads must follow the large I watercourses, far away from our j it f.ri, UnU As to that most inten-sting ones- j tion. how t raise the money, time ctviAA wilt niiirni5t 11 tn nv 1 - j morc th week than that the plan - ; iness like and within our rcaca. 1 aiiu ri Hi.i v ' 1 DIED.
