As much as thirty-three thousand feet of timber was cut in one day last week at the Coffin & Macdonald mi'l. A fhan named Buckner was badly hurt m the saw mill here Tuesday by one of the little saws striking his hand. Morrow, who has been seriously ill at the Entella, was tak en away Tuesday to Asheville by his rattier ana brother, who were called here bv wire. A ferry-boat making five-minute trips between the court house and the depot would be h paying invest ment as well as a public blessing to our flood-bound citizens. Volume one, number one, of "Pupil Press," published monthly by Rev. Jno. S. Smiley at Swain, is now before us. The advancement of Sunday schools is its mission Success to you, brother. We regret to hear that Rev. G. II. Church, the beloved Statesville pas tor, slipped and broke a small bone in his leg during the freeze. Bibli cal Recorder. Mr. Church is well remember here. Three freight cars were damaged somt last week, by coming in cou tact with a pileot lumber which had settled towards the side track, caus ed by the recent high winds. Whether there is really nothing to be said, or whether both sides be lieye that the wise man holdt his tongue while some fool does the talking is difficult to determine in the' case of the injunction proceed ing" instituted against Coffin & Macdonald by the Unaka & Tucka- j seegeo Land k Timber Co. j At any rate nothing can be lean -ed further than what is plainly in everybody's sight the big force f men employed on Deep creek are out ot work, the injunction having completely suspended operations in-l the woods. The information" gathered from outside sources shows this action to be something like a breech of con tract, but ad-uo authontative state ments ara made, the ready must be left to decide for himself. Coffin k Macdonald have a con tract to cut and saw the timber from the Whittier lands. For this they were to receive a' stipulated price. With this idea in viw they sent a big crew of men out to cut the logs and put them into Deep creek. Thiugs were working smoothly until a few days ago, when, it is said, another concern offered to do the ork at a reduced price. This .set the pot a-boiling, but the contract held the lid down until the accumulation of pressure burst the vessel, and the injunction is what could be picked up of the scattered fragments. The logging crew is,, of course, idle, but the mill is busy sawing the proprietors' individual logs. The case is to be tred in Waynes- ville on the 9th before Judge Nor wood, and the result will be anx iously awaited. Whatever may be the termination, there is one self-evident fact myol- ved, and that is if the defendants should ever see fit to inaugurate as a redress a suit for damages, almost the entire working population of the county , may be summoned as conscientious and experienced testi mony in their tavor. James Meadows is Champion. In this issue will be found a no tice to the General Assembly having as its purpose the amendment of the charter of pig-infested Bryson City. For some time everybody has been decrying this unwholesome nuisance but nobody had enough public in terest to undertake effective proceed ings. The dissatisfaction has been universal and of long standing, and the credit of shouldering the load of hog-exolusion aud taking steps in the right direction belongs solely to James Meadows. He has cham pioned the cause in which all are equally interested, and the sanction and co operation of every citizen should be volunteered without de lay. Mr. Meadows has framed a peti tion to be forwarded to our represen tative, and you should go aud sign it without him having to look you up and make the request. This is our chance to get rid of the hogs. If Representative Woodard wishes the enlist the gratitude of every voter here he will get behind this request for deliverance and push it through promptly. Everybody joiD hands now and lets move the grunters. Teachers Institute.
