The coniinittee suggests that the raos' feasible manner of reaching the dwi red object s to set apart a ''Memorial Feativa Day," and they ask that the General Commanding wm designate the date, and issue a genera! " . , I heue ,erai Commanding, there- fore jn c uipli mce with the r-quest of the committee, designates Friday May 1, 1896, as the most suitable for a "Memorial F stival Day,'? to be set apart for the use of the worn en of the .South in raising funds for t:.is grea' Memorial Hall. For in whose hauls could this sacred trust more proper, y be placed and with more certainly of success, than into those of the gentle wom en of the South, who have never yet fait red or failed in the performance ot any duty, either in war or in peace, impose! upon them lor the Southern cause. Their spirit and . determination animated the men 'of the South at the 6cene of the first conflict; they were the mo6t constant and unre mitting patriot' and workers dur ing their country's mighty struggle and the last to abandon the sacred cause after Southern hopes vanish ed behind the clouds at Apporaat- j tox. The true historv of their deeds and triumphs has ant yet' been told. No historian has yet written the story, nor mus- sung the song, nor mins'rel strung the lyie, which fitly celebrate their, praise. The straits to which they were reduced for food and clothing, the self-abnpgation and hardships en. dured by them during those dark and gloomy days of war, finds no pare'.lel in?; history; their patriotism and course -will be written in gold en betters upon the tablets of time, ineffireable while memory lasts, and, as ministering angels, their names will live upon the pages of poetry and in romance as long as chivalry exists in the hearts and minds of mankind. This "Battle Abbey" will not be dedicated Ion to the history and and de s of the civic and military heroes of th- great st of civ.l wars. bu the General Commanding will see, that wi bin its sacrel portal sufficient and conspici n.s space will be reserved for the ames und fame of t ae "Heroines of he South".
