A Letter from Mr. DeHart. Editof of the Times; Allow me space to write a few lines to my many friends of Swaiu County. I having been defeated, do again return many thanks to the people t.r the substantial wisdom of your confidence in reg'stering me the popular vote for Representative Saturday the 5th inst. The demo critic convention met Monday, 7 but two of the powers went togeth er and cast me out of the great Dem, ocratic field where I have been ever fcihee I have been 18 years of age whe I have rolled np my sleeves and gone to work for Democracy of our country. ' .. I was born and have grown up in Swain County. I am for my country. There has no war in which I could prove my devotion to my c luntry; but a na tion liie this does not need a war to derelope patrotism. We live in a land where every year presents a battle field and every day a c.ill call to duty. Let us be greateful for the progress made and with malice toward none and charity all begin the work of the campaign. Those who fight for the right may be de feated, but they are never conquer ed, tht-y many suffer reverses but never suffers disgrace. Sept. 9, 1896. Very Truley, W. M. DeHart. TOXU. it M vnjipsa. J ust be bre speaking began, a large crowd of Republicans on horse-back para ded our stret-ts, coming in from dif ferent direction. We think there Were about one lumdied on horse back. Judge Russell made a lengthy speech, but did not seem to have received that inspiration which us ually follows such an ovation as wes given him by a splendid looking crowd of well dressed and thrifty tillers of the soil. In fact, our farm ers know about as much on the fi nancial question as the speakers, If however, they were able to enlight en us on that line they failed to do so. They made mild talks, in no way abusive, and there was less cheering than we ever witnessed at any political speaking. A few ex treme men were disappointed. We had the pleasure oi travelling with them to Andrews. They are pleas ant and intelligent gentlemen, but they do not seem sanguine over the election of McKinley.or a least they were not enthused as is usual on such occasious. iniAT SAkKf prove the great Vl merit of Hood's Sarsaparilla.
