Sylvan Valley News MINEk & HKKESK, Kditors and Propiietors. Fridaij Morning, May 1, lOOS. Town and County Items. \f. M. Shepherd, of Henderson ville, wjis ill town on Monday night. Tlie Presb\'tf>rian riiureh has a new roof and is greatly improved in looks thereby. We are glad to see Uncle Charlie ('antrell out on the .streets after a severe attnck of rheujnatisni. Rev. C. 1). (’hapman had the mis- fortnne to lose his iiorse on Monday Cause unknown but thought to be colic. C. V. Shuford and A. H. (’ox made a trip up Davidson lliver recently and enjoyed the hospitality of A. (’. McCall. T!ie Magic liantern exhil)ition given nt tlu* court hous(? on Monday niiiht by .Mr. Duncan was enjoyed by those ])re-;ent' J. W. 3Ic.Miun took a party of friends to T^ookiug (iiass falls on last Tuesday. A most pleasant trip is re- j)orted by tlic participants. The little piece of board walk in front front of the <'I<1 i>ostottice building is,menace to pedestrians and should be taken up or repaired. Houston Mackey m;xle a living trii) to Chnelaiid >TllN, S. od Sat- nrd:jy retuiniug .Monday, lb; r<‘- ]»orts tlu^ condition of erops in that section as [»eing very backwiiid. Track l.iyi.ig is progressing rapid'y ou tilt' r.iilroad al'ove T<»x:»v»:iy sta tion. From the progress made it will be but a short lin.e initil the iHjad will b(* in eonditioa fur travel. We understand tliat at least twen ty fnnnlies liave moved on to the Vanderbilt property on Davidson river during the last two months. At this rate that section will soon be tilled. We see that the road mnchine has been returned to town. We hope tiKit it will not be allowed to rust away, our streets nee»I to be worked and this j)low is the cheapest and ])est method of repairing them. AVe hear that our Dramatic Club is going to favor us with another play in the near future. We look for ward to it with pleasure. Their per formance of tiie “Man with Three Wives” was good and w(^ ]»redict another succe.ss. AVe have had several inquiries about that “Hloody Spring.” W'- therel’ore ask the correspondetit who wrote us about it to bring or send us a sam])le of the water, b<*fore and after agitating. AVe want to show it to our Iriends. AVe are always glad to see election time come around. It seems as if all the candidates are such goo«l friends ot'ours, so glad to see us; they can't see us across the street Mithout speaking and if they are not shaking liands with some one else they come across and give us the glad hand. From the signs we should judge that trout are about ripe. In fact we have heard that they are jump ing out of the creeks so as to read; the fisherman's hook. If we did not know that something would go wrong in the United States should we not give our personal attention to matters in general, we would go away l>ack and walk down some of the fine trout streams in our county. A visitor remarked the other day that since coming to Brevard one thought had troubled him. He sai<l that he noticed here, in this S(*(;tion of “The Land of the Sky” that .some of the principal streets had barbed wire fences along the «i<lewalks. AA^hat troubled him was thinking il there were the .«ame kind of fences nlong the side walks in that other “Land of the Shy.” We told him no, that Brevard had the monopoly on it for Time and Hades for Etern nity. Dante thought such a punish ment was too cruel to mention in his Inferno. Iniportant Meeting. To insure Brevard having a good base ball team it is necessary that wr have some organization. A meeting will therel'ore be held on next Mon day afternoon at four o'clock in the McMinn House to elect officers and perfect the organization. AVe must not let the glorious record of last year be dimmed by lack of enthusi asm among us this year. We are ^lad to state that Mr. Clarke will again t»<ke great iiiterest in the team and with the help and advice of others a good team can bt se(Hired. A first class ball team is a good adveitisement to Brevard and like all other advertisements it must be kept up. Advertising for a short time does not make the returns that steady and well placed ads do. AVe have established a reputation for hav ing a good team anil we must sus tain it. Let every person who is interested in base ball and in the advertising ot Brevard aUend the nieeting on Mon day afteiiioon next, 4 o’clock at the McMinn House. Prominent Wedding. On AVednesday, april the home of (r. F. .Justus, of the (’arson creek section was the scene of a very plea.s- ant nnirriage ceremony. Porter A. Morgan, son of James M. Morgan, <if Calvert, and Kllen Justus w*>re united in the holy bonds of wedloi k, in the presence of quite a number ot relatives and invited guests, lit'v. I. 'f. Xew'tf)U ]>ronounced the cere mony which united the two lives. '1 he Xi:\vs extends coJigratulations. Tde Petrified Gentleman. AVe suggest the following in order to settle all <lisi»utes as to the origin of the well Known citizen named ab(*ve. Let the owner bring him back to Transylvania and inject some of the water from the .sj)rii*g that flows blood. This will revive him and we hope that he will be able to state whether he was an Indian, Jiritish soldier, a murdered mnn or a fake. From the accounts of this spring we feel sure that it would have as much etlecton a i)laster man as one of flesh and blood. AVe think it is but fair that this effort be niade to discover his origin for the benefit of the public. The owner of the spring is willing to furnish the won derful water and the petrified gen tleman will do the rest. Ttie May Day Festival. Of all the annual festivals which grace the days of our year, there is none which is so intiocent in its amusements as the “May Day’* of ye olden time. The (]uestion of who would l)e “Queen of the .May” ha<l been decided, the “May-iK>le” erect ed in some convenient grove, and the “Mav-j)ole Dance,'’ the dinner in the woods, and the crowning with rare flowers of the May Queen wei e events ill the lives of the youth of former days which will live in the minds of participants in these ]ileas- ures as long as memory lasts. We are sorry that this festival is no more widely observed at the present time, esjiecially in the soutl;—the home of wihl flowers and gentle breezes. Here there are many crude ways of celebrating the day and ‘'trying their fortunes” by the young, and doubtless many of our young lady readers have been out this morning “before sun-up,” hunting a snail— the first one found indicating wheth er their future husband will be the ow ner of a liouse. May morning in this section is the only proper time to plant vines, and the seed for many a melon patch will be in the ground before this pa per reaches its readers. There are people hereabouts who firmly be- believe that cucurbitaceous plant ings will not produce the best results unless made the tirst morning in May, before sunrise. AA'ell. it’s a good thing to have a fixed date, or some things might be overlooked. It is g’oing to come pretty hard on May to have to furnish all our spring weather this year. “I have derived great benefit from he use of Chamberlain’s Paitj Balm for rheumatism and lumbago,’’ says Mrs. Anna Haglegans, of Tuckahoe, N. J. -‘My husband used it tor a sprained back and was also quickly relieved. In fact it is the test fam ily linirtient I have ever used. I would not think of being without it. [ have recommended it to many and they always speak very highly of it und declare its merits are wonderful. For sale by Z. W. Nichols, Bre vard, and (). L. "After my first baby was bom I did not seem to regain my strength although the doctor gave me a tonic which he consid* ered very superior, but instead ci getting better I grew weaker every day. My hus band insisted that I take Wine of Cardui for a week and see what it would do for me. I did take the medicine and was very grateful to find my strength and health slowly returning. In two weeks I was out of bed and in a month I was able to take up my usual duties. 1 am very enthusi astic in its praise.'* Wine of Cardui reinforces the organs of generation for the ordeal of preg nancy and childbirth. It prevents mis carriage. No woman who takes AVine of Cardui need fear the coming of her child. If Mrs. Unrath had taken Wine of Cardui before her baby came she ■would not have been weakened as she was. Her rapid recovery should commend this great remedy to every expectant mother.
