The Thrice-a-Week WovUl ]ori}T a<ro esitablisheil itself in public favor, an«.l it is now I’ccot^nized as the sirDnjrest ])ublication of its kind in the United States. Advertisers and publishers seeking clubbing: combinations—and they know best—universally testify t<.> this. It is widely circulated in every state and territory of the Union, and even in remote South Africa and on the f?old tields in the deserts of Aus tralia. These are the things that tell. This year we have the Presidential campaign, in which all Americans are deeply interested. Already the issues are being discussed and the two great parties are preparing for the first moves. You will not want to misp. any details, and if you subscribe now your year's subscription will cover the campaign from beginning to end. The Thrice a-Week World is abso lutely fair in its political news. Par tisan bias is never allowed to affect its news columns, and Democrat and Republican alike can obtain in its ]>ages truthful accounts of all the great political contests. In addition to all the news, the Thrice-a-Week World furnishes the l>est serial fiction, elaborate market reports and other features of interest. TRUTH PERVERTED. flooaevelt'a Letter of Acceptnac* m MaMM of SHratateineut. Friends and opponents alike agree in ascribing to PresiUent Uoosevelt’s let ter of acceptance the merit of vigor, 4H^8 the New York World. It Is easy lo be vigorous when you are untram- Dieled by anything but the dictionary. It is when you are hampered b.y a slar- ish regard for facts that there begin:;! to be trouble in hurling strong lau* guage. Mr. ltoo.sevelt Is under no such ditfl culty. lie recognizes no obligation to keep his words in any sort of relation vlth realities. They meet all his re quirements if they are euliiciently noisy. For instance, the president says: “We do not have to guess at our ow’n conrictions and then correct the guess if it seems uiipopular. Tlie principles which we profess are those in w’hich we believe wltb heart and soiiJ and Btreugth.” Yet this is the same Theodore Hoose- velt W'ho said in liis “Life of Thomas H. Benton” that “political economists bare pretty generally agreed that pro tection is vicious in theory ami harm ful In practice,” and w'ho now' stands pat on the divinity of the highest tariff •ver known In a civilizeil countrj*. Mr. Roosevelt assierts that the Ke- publlcan party is “on record as favor ing arrangements for reciprocal trade relations with other countries.” Yet when the time comes to conclude one of those reciprocal arrangements that the party Is “on record as favoring" it always kills the proposition. The only Buch arrangement that has gone into effect is that with Cuba. These are a few samples of direct misstatement. To expose all Mr. lioo^e- velt's perversions of the truth w ould require a c*ommentary as long as the letter of acceptance Itself. Tlie con- ser\’’atlve Boston Herald well says; “It would be too severe a criticism to say that there is not a subject touohecl upon by Mr. Roosevelt In this long, art fully wrought deliverance which is treated candidly and fairly. In ad vocacy and in opposition he is equally unjust.” Quick liunchea »nd Marriases. Chicago has become known the world around for rapid people, but a recent marriage celebrated in that lively city Is a record breaker even in that swift community. The maa is a buyer.for one of the large department stores. The Chicago Chronicle is reisponsihle for this ac count of his nuptials: It wa« hts weddlni; day. K« waa at the dei>artment atore at noon. Ills companion waa a traveling salesman. The latter was <lisplaylr.gr a very fine line of carpets. The buyer expected to Invest about J75.- COO. It was rather an Important afternoon for him. Two hours later he was with the traveling salesman. He had made half of his purchases. Another hour slipped away, and the buying had not been fin ished. A short time later and it waa but a few minutes of 4 o’clock. “One of the finest lines of rxirpeta it was ever my good fortune to offer,” the salesman was commenting:. “Very fine.” “i’d like to close out th« lot at 110,000.” He looked at his watch. “Got a very important engagement. Won’t take me but five minutes. Walt here till I get back.” The salesman said he would, of course. The buyer slipped away. He Jumped Into an automobile and a moment later v/as at a Justice’s office. The bride was there. So waa one witness and the licen.se. •'Short, your honor,” fsaid the groom. The ceremony was short. It required two minutes to make them mnn and wife. A moment later and the bridegroom was In the automobile and on his way to the department store. “GuesK I’ll accept that offpr.” ho said. He had been gone three minutus. After that let Chicairo bo knoAvn as the city not only of quick lunches, but also "f quick marriage.s. ion Notice. By mutuai will . before T Rooaevelt a. Peril. In the course of his address befora the Connecticut Democratic conven tion Henry Wade Rogers, dean of the Yale Law school, had the followini; to say about Roosevelt: “Since he became president he has shown not only by his treatment o? Panama aur. by his action In the pen sion matter as well as by his dictato rial assumption of authority In every department of the government such e disregard of the limitations of power as to lead many thoughtful men to dUj- trust his wisdom. It Is this distrust which perhaps more thKii any other reason has led the Independent prest* of the country almost without excep tion to pronounce against him lu tbJlf eampalgu and to regard him as ‘a dan gerous pilot for a greet ship.’ ” The latest advices from Mnnohurla show that the Russian aniiy there ' numbered at the outbreak of hostlll- { ties about 00,000 nicu. This iucJuded j the Port Arthur garrison and the rall- i w^y guards. Re-enforcements from the ! north brought the army under Kuro- patkin up to a strength of l^O.WX) by j the middle of July, when It was still ' at Haicheng, fifty miles south of Llao- yang. Cieneral OrloflTs corps, w'hich reached the field at Llaoyang, probably made up for the losses in action dur ing July and August. Apparently the Russians were outnumbered two to one at Llaoyang. Kuropatkln Is not one of your or dinary generals. The ordinary com mander devotes most of his time to fighting and to getting ready to fight. Kuropatkln devotes most of his time to retreating and to getting ready to retreat. And, by the way, as a speci men of unconscious humor, a recent statement of a Russian newspaper is entitled to a prize. This journal in dis cussing the aspe<‘ts of the campaign In Slanchurla seriously referred to Kuro- patkln’s magnificent “advance” toward Mukden. THE LOW RATES TO OPCRATSS According to the Hon. Vincent Duf fy, member of parliament from County Cavan, the typical Irish gentleman aa depicted In the fiction of I>ever and Ix)ver, W'ho did nothing but ride to the hounds, fight duels and drink whis ky, no longer can be found. Indeed his habits were always considerably ex aggerated In the romantic creations or these authors. IIo^ Manyt Let's see. Journalists are “some pumpkins’* In Panama, according to the statement of the editor of the Panama Star, who de clares that he was oft'ered the presi dency of the republic If ho would start the revolution In his paper. He re fused and Is therefore still editor of the Star. There can be no longer any question of the possession of several sub’-narlne boats by Russia.
