They do tell that they just laked one of havin^as many Democi-ats out to the primary in CHoucester as tlie Republicans usually have out to their County Conventions and we all know that Gloucester is not much of a Democratic stronghold. * Mr There are tw’o essetial elements for political success, harmony and interest, and there is no doubt that the Democratic party in the county has both, as was in dicated by the interest taken in the primaries and by the perfect harmony that prevailed. ^ -Jf The Republicans have carried Transylvania county a few times in tiie past by reason of the Dem ocrats being asleep, but judging- from the very large attendance at the i)^'i*^iaries last Saturday every Democrat is awake and there is no hope for the Rads. ★ * * The press associations of North Carolina and Virginia are going to hold another joint meeting this year. Last year they met at Asheville, and this summer the Tar Heel writers will be the guest of their Virginia brothers at Chase City, Va. Why not join the South Carolina association at the Isle of Palms next month and make it a three-cornered af fair. —Greenville News. that the Democratic party has grown so in Transylvania, the reason is that we have a thinking sensible cit’.^.enship and they re fuse to be systematicaly and per petually fooled and deceived and they realize that the hope of the la boring man and small property owner is in the Democratic party, hence our majority has grown year by year and w^e predict not less than 250 majority for the en tire Democratic ticket this fall. * * * Discord never nourishes in any political party where the people take interest in and attend the primaries, for there every man has his say and his voice is heard, and there is small chance for any chicanery. With the very large turnout at the primar ies held on the IGth we feel as if every man in the county should be satisfied with the result, never mind if his particular friend did not get the nomination, for the nominee is certainly the choice of the large majority of our party in the county. * « * The action of Buncombe county in declaring for the unit rule af ter the tirst ballot in the congress ional convention is so undemo cratic that it deserves the rebuke of every county in this district. Unless county conventions abide by the rules of the democratic plan of organization they are not democratic and should be barred from a voice in all democratic bod ies, As we see it this action of the Buncombe democracy debars them from even the tirst vote in the Congressional Convention. This paper came to the conclusion that when members of the same po- lirical party are fandidatos for nomi nation. it is not the mission of a newspaper to advocate the cause of one candidate in j)ivt>renee to an other.—Asheville Citizen. Evidently the Citizen aspires to an exalted position in the news paper world. Of course such puny sheets as the Atlanta Con stitution and Journal-—and all the leading dail^^ aud w’eekly pa pers of Georgia which are array ed in favor of one or the other candidates for Governor—should come and take instruction from the speechless w’isdom of our mountain contemporary. In every way that it has been possible to show its preference for Gudger during this campaign the Citizen has not been slow to act—only wanting the moral cour age to take a stand editorially. In all its reports of conventions, in its delays in reporting condi tions favoring other candidates, its actions have been so glaringly one sided that democrats over this entire district are doubtful whether it is a democratic paper, and “actions speak louder than words.’* If a newspaper has any in fluence it is its duty to use it in the interest of the common people —the trusts and millionaires are amply able to care for their own. It is not doing its duty unless it points out the betterments which-will accrue to the masses by the nomination and election of one candidate hi preference to another, before the primaries are held.
