Asheville Letter
NEWS NOTES FROM THE MOUNTAIN
METROPOLIS OF INTEREST TO
NEWS READERS.
From Our Regular Correspondent.
The hearing in the Mills di
vorce case has again taken a turn
which is of local interest. Two
negro bell men of this city were
taken to New York as witnesses
against Mrs. Mills, to testify con
cerning her action during her
stay in this city last summer.
The attorneys for Mrs. Mills have
now called in members of the
Asheville police force, Sheriff
Hunter, Clerk of Police Court
Norris and several justices of the
peace to testify as to the charac
ter of the two negroes who were
witnesses against Mrs. Mills.
They want’to prove the character
of the tw’o negroes and also the
character of some of the other
witnesses in the case who are
Asheville people. It is hard to
get at the out croppings of this
testimony as the hearing is being
held in Asheville behind closed
doors and every one connected
with the case is keeping their
mouths closed as if they were
sealed. The New York dailies
are publishing s<^nsational detail
ed accounts of what is bein^ said
and done in Asheville, but if
their stories are based on i3ny
fact at all they must be able to see
through closed doors and read
minds; for accurateinformation is
hard to get by Asheville newspa
per men who are more or less ac
quainted with a number of the
witnesses and attorneys in the
case.
With the approaching city elec
tion close at hand the Asheville
voter is again feeling his impor
tance in this world for he is meet
ing with pleasant smiles on all
sides and the “Glad Hand” is the
order of the day. Mr. “Voter”
is greeted with friendly kindness
by Mr. “Canidate” and Mr “Vot
er” throws out his chest at being
recognized by a prominent man
who had never condesended to
even give him a look before.
From the present outlook there
will be as many candidates for
offices as there will be voters.
Since the purchase by Mr.
Shoenfelt of New Orleans of the
Green-Trash tract of land in West
Asheville on which is located
the Old Carrier Race track and
his announcement that he would
have annual racing held in the
near future a number of the
prominent people of this city in
eluding Judge Prichard and
members of of the W. C. T. U.
and the clergy of Asheville have
made a formal protest against the
establishing of a race track near
this city. They have framed up
a petition and sent it to Raleigh
with the request to Senator Webb
that same be passed on by that
body w'hich will prohibit racing
in any form in Buncombe county.
Mr. Shoenfelt has invested sev
eral hundred thousand dollars in
real estate in and around this
city and the action on the part of
some of its leading citizens con
cerning his proposed project is
How Much Could You Get
For Your Farm?
You are a farmer. You live near this town. You own land.
Let us say that you own more than you need and would like to sell
a hnudrod aci*es.
How much could you get per acre?
Land values have risen lately. But has the value of your land
risc;ii as you thiuk it should?
Your land is good land. You think It Is worth considerably
more than anybody has offered you. Well, let us see.
A man buying farm land naturally prefers to locate near a
thriving, up to date town. He wants good home markets for his
crops. He wants good
schools.
Let us say your land is
three miles from town. A
farm that looks very much
like yours is three miles
from a town twice as big
and twice as prosperous
as this town.
If you were going to
buy .a farm for your own
occupancy, wouldn’t you
.pay a whole lot more for
land near the town that is
twice as large and twice
as lively?
Of course you would.
It would be good business.
Now, what makes a
town big and bustling?
Money: Money in circula
tion. Not in circulation in
Chicago, for instance, but
right in the town that
wants to grow.
How much money have
you sent to the big Mail
Order houses in tlie city
the past ten years? How
much have your neigh
bors sent? How much
have all of you together
put out of circulation
here at home?
It is probably beyond
calculation. If a\l that money had been spent in your own home
town, isn’t it reasonable to assume that the town would have
grown more than it has grown?
Wouldn’t this town be a bigger and better towm ?
Wouldn’t it have more stores to buy your produce?
Wouldn’t it have more public improvements to make
it more attractive to outsiders who might come here to live,
to go into business,'or buy your surplus land at a good
figure ?
TO TRADE AT HOME MEANS TO HELP THE TOWN
AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. TO HELP THE TOWN AND
THE NEIGHBORHOOD MEANS TO HELP YOURSELF.
t
received with regret by the
wealthy athelete from New Or
leans, who intends making Ashe
ville his home. *
It has developed that the much
talked of purchase of lands in
Limestone township by John M.
Campbell real estate dealer of
this city was not made fr>r the
Goulds or Vanderbilts as was
stated in press accounts all
over the United States. As the
story went Mr. Campbell was
buying up hundreds of acres of
land for the Goulds who would
build a beautiful country home
within twenty minutes ride of
Asheville e-tc., but Mr. Campbell
stated to your correspondent that
such was not the case as he had
made the purchases himself from
a point of speculation and that he
was now offering the property
for sale in small plats at a rea
sonable price per acre.
James Rucker the negro con
victed at last term of superior
court has been sentenced to
be hanged on April 13. His
attorney Eugene Way is pre
paring papers for an appeal to
the supreme court. Mr. Way
states that as his client has been
sentenced at this term of court
he has until August term to pre
pare his paper of appeal for pre
sentation and this fact will give
his clientanother six monthslease
on life before the final termination
of his case. L. R. D.
Fresh whales are now quoted
at $2400. If these luxuries of
life continue to rise in price,
some families will have to confine
themselves to little cods and sar
dines.
If Mr. Oliver, the disappointed
bidder for the Panama Canal
work, will take the advice of the
many claimants who have been
prosecuting their claims since the
Revolutionary and Civil Wars, he
will not depend too much on that
§40,000 damages claim against
the government.
You should be very careful of your
bowels when you have a cold. Near
ly all other cough syrups are consti
pating, especially those containing
opiates. Kennedy’s Laxative Cough
Syrup moves the bowels—conta-ins
NO opiates. Conforms to National
Pure Food and Dru;i8 Law. Eears

taste. Sold by Brevard Drug Co.
Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish says if
a woman is careful she can dress
on $5000 a year. But a woman
whose husband gets only a thou
sand has to be pretty careless to
do it.
Mr. Harriman says he has been
a pack-horse all his life. From
the amount that he has gotten
away with, it might be imagined
that he w^as a pack elephant or a
pack- locomotive.
