From Our Regnlar Correspondent.
Avery Alexander, a 15 y ear-old
youth of this city has disappeared
from his home in West Asheville
and his parents are worrying about
the missing boy. Avery is the son
of J. H. Alexander, a carpenter of
this city and a brother of Sam
Alexander, who came into promi
nence about six years ago when he
so gallantly defended the Emma
postofifice which was broken into
by robbers. Mr. Alexander de
scribes his missing son as being
large for his age (15 years), light
hair, fair skin and blue eyes. He
says that the boy can be identified,
by a large scar on his right side
which was caused through an op
eration for appendicitis.
Information was received in this
city last week to the effect that
Claude Ball, a young white man,
was shot and killed at a box supper
near Laurel church, Madison coun
ty, by Deputy Sheriff Charles Ram
sey of that county. It is said that
the deputy sheriff* was called in to
quiet a disturbance among some of
the men who were under the influ
ence of liquor, and that after leav
ing the church he was attacked, by
the deceased, his brother and. tw^o
others, and. that he opened, fire on
the attacking parties in self defence,
killing Ball.
John W. McMinn, a resident of
Brevard and. a prominent citizen of
Transylvania county, was in this
city all of last w^eek so as to be wuth
his wife, who has been critically ill
at the Mission Hospital, this city.
Mr. McMinn informed, your corre
spondent that Mrs. McMinn’s con
dition was greatly improved and
that she vras doing fine.
This city has been visited by
numerous small fires within the
past couple of weeks, but the effi
ciency of the Asheville fire depart
ment prevented any one of them
being very destructive. The equip
ment of the Asheville fire compa
nies is now up to the highest stan
dard, and the men are a well drilled,
capable body of fire fighters, as
proven on a number of occasions,
when they were compelled to grap^
pie with fires that if not gotten un
der control in short order would
have resulted in a heavy loss of
property.
Francis Sumner who killed Char
ley Powers at Arden station, this
county, about five months ago, "was
found guilty of manslaughter at
his second trial held last week and
sentenced, to three years on the
county road^by Judge Cooke.
Information was received here
last ’week that two prominent young
Asheville people had been married
in New York City. The ceremony
\vas a very quiet one, only a few
friends being present as witnesses.
The contracting parties are Miss
Leila Maie Johnston and D. C.
Waddell, jr.
Asheville has been the scene of a
number of fights. They have hap
pened in all kinds of ways and in
all kinds of places, but the latest
in the way of a fight to be pulled,
off in this city occurred, in the po
lice station one day last week. It
was a hand.icap, four-to-one shot,
if you win you lose, fought under
the old rules—lick your man fair,
but if you can’t, lick him any way.
The contestants did not use regula
tion gloves, nor was there a time
keeper or referee to see. that each
man got a clean break, for there
was only one round, and that was
’round the city lockup, with no
two-minute rests. During the last
part of the fight an outsider took a
hand, in the battle and. gave his
strength and skill to the mrty in
the minority, who happened, to be
Police Officer Rogers. Officer Rog
ers had arrested a white man by
the name of Stewart and was in the
act of placing him in a cell when
three of his friends attacked, the
officer, attempting to free the pris
oner. One of the men got the offi
cer’s club, and it is said, that one of
them tried to use a knife during
the mix up, but the timely arrival
of Plumbing Inspector Israel
changed, the aspect of affairs and.
three of them took French leave,
hitting only the high places as they
made their retreat. The officer,
although having four men on him,
managed to retain liis grasp on the
prisoner and landed his man be
hind the bars.
Work of. the Rapid Transit Com^
pany, who are building a new street
railroad from Overlook Park to the
Square is said to be progressing
rapidly on Sunset mountain, which
is a terminus of the line. The work
within the city limits has not been
started as yet, but mat-erial is ex
pected to arrive shortly and the
building of the the road w^ill be
pushed to completion. The Rapid
Transit Company will open Over
look Park to the nnblic as soon as
that end of the road running from
the Golf Links to the park is fin
ished. The rest of the road from
the Golf Links to the Square will
be built later and will open up a
new part of the city and traverse
a part of the residential section
that is now inaccessible to the street
car lines. The people of this city
are looking forward with much
pleasure to the completion of this
new street railw^ay as Overlook
park w^as always a great place for
picnic parties, dances and outings
in general. The city lost one of its
chief attractions when the old
Howland road was put out of com
mission and. the park closed, to the
public. L. R. D.
My Best Friend.'
Alexander Benton, who lives on
Rural Route 1, Fort Edward, N. Y.,
says; Dr. King’s New Discovery is
my best earthly friend. It cured
me of asthma six years ago. It has
also performed a wonderful cure of
incipient consumption for my son^s
wife. The first bottle ended the ter
rible cough, and this accomplished,
the other symptons left one by one,
until she was perfectly well. Dr.
King’s New Discovery’s power over
coughs and colds is simply marve
lous.” No other remedy has ever
equalled it. Fully guaranteed by
T. B. Allison Druggist. 50c and
