McDowell, the insurance agent of Asheville, is in town—and somebody is wearing a smiling face. Miss Asalee King and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Langley of Taylors, S. C., are on a short visit to the home of P. S. King. Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Galloway suf fered the loss by death hist Thurs day of their son Claud, one of the twins born to them last spring. Mrs. Mary McComb of Columbia, S. Henry paid an official visit to the county home for the aged and infirm on the top of Rocky Hill last Saturday. There are now about ten inmates in the home. C. C. Kilpatrick and family spent several days- last week at Cedar Mountain. The sheriff found the vacation very agreeable and rest ing after the excitement of a suc cessful race for i^enomination. a. W. Waters and Henry King went from here last week on a short excursion to Charleston, S. C. They had a very enjoyable time in the city by the sea; took in the many quaint and curious sights of the historic old town, and visited Water will be cut off today (Fri day) from 2 to 7 p. m. R. H. Zachary of Oconee. Ga., was in Brevard a few days last week. Master J. Pinkney Starnes Jr. is spending the summer with his cousin Rev. J. F. Starnes at “Marr’s Hill.” Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Pope of Mt.: •pleasant, Ga., visited their sisters Misses Ida and Jessie Sitton the first of this week. The editor of this jmper did an unusual thing for him last Mon day—stayed at home half the day on account of sickness. Mrs. W. D. Davis and children and Mrs. Robinson and children of Jacksonville, Florida, are stopping at the home of F. V. Whitmire. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jenkins and Donald McIntosh went to Waynes- ville last week. Mrs. Jenkins and brother Donald remained visiting their old home. Mrs. A. R. Jones and Miss Jessie .Burnett of Gainesville, Fla., Mrs. F.'D. Blood worth and Mrs. F. M. Butner of- Savannali, Ga., are at Mountain View cottage. The Southern Stock & Farming Company is having constructed a warehouse, fifty by twenty feet, on the Bronifield lot near the depot. The house will be used for general storage and as a depot for i^otatoes to be shipi)cd from this place. The old time Fiddler’s Conven tion, which was scheduled for two nights last week, had only one meeting, on Friday night. The fid dlers of the county were conspicu ous for their absence, and the small audience was disappointed by the paucity of musical talent exhibited. J. C. Whitmire and J. C. ROSMAN BOX SUPPER. The Ice Cream and Box Supper given by the ladies of Rosman for the benefit of the High School on Saturday night, August the 8th, was a decided success in every way and while the weather'was^ rainy yet there were nearly two hundred people present, and resulted in the addition of $88.11 to the school fund for the payment of the desks, purchased for same. ^ Great credit is due Mrs. J. S. Silverstein. who had charge of the occasion and worked very hard from the time of its first meeting of arrangement until the close of the festival, and the ladies who baked cakes and do nated various supplies, together with the young men and young la dies who made ice cream, lemonade and waited on tables. Great credit is due Mesdames Ulys Merrell, M. M. Bryant, Lee Fisher, Lionel Young, Misses Lela Brooks and Geneva Orr, who baked delicious cakes. Messrs. Edward Brooks, Wiley Glazener, Tillman Meece and Dock Galloway churned ice cream that was par excellence, and Mrs. Raines^ Misses Laura Whitmire, Martha Brooks, Anna Garren, Beu lah Whitmire, Dorah Glazener, Ma mie Fisher, Lela Brooks and Gene va Orr made excellent waitresses and gathered in quantities of nick els and dimes. Mesdames J. B. Da vis^ Zeb Galloway and Mrs. Pink Aiken rendered good service in many ways, as well as a number of other people in the district who do nated milk, sugar, etc. Thanks are due Messrs. Flem Glazdner, Leo Hogsed and Rob Mackey for the music furnished, and also Messrs. Young, Erwin and Raines for lem ons donated and dishes loaned ; and last but not least, special thanks are due Professor T.''C. Henderson for auctioning the boxes and othei- wise assisting in makiiig'it a finan cial succesis. Alfred White proved an excellent cashier. The cake for the prettiest girl was awarded to little jNIiss Eva Taylor, • w’^ho received 423 votes, with Miss Lela Brooks a very close second w’ith 406 votes. This cake brought $44.05. The cake for the most popular girl was awarded to Miss Mamie Fisher.
