Grumbling has always been con sidered a prerogative of John Bull, and not an agreeable one, but the in cident taken from “England Without and Within” shows that it has its uses. I ha»l been a little over a week in London lodgings and had my break fasts served by the housekeeper. One morning the miUd said as she took my tray: “I’m afraid we shan’t satisfy you, sir, with your breakfasts.” I told her my breakfasts were very good; that the tea, eggs, bacon, fish, muffins and marmalade were good enough for any man and all I wished. “Yes. sir, but you never grumble about anything you have, and so we don’t know how to please you.” Our Real Army. No nation oA^er can or ever did main- tain at all times a standing army suf ficiently great to defend Itself against all other powers. The strength and the dependence of every government are In her citizen soldiers and are In exact proportion to their bravery and effectiveness.
