Tells His ’ Hearers That fivery* Man Who Registers After This Year Will Be Required to Read the Constitution of North Caro lina in the Latin Language. We copy the following from the Waynesville Courer and hope the good people of Transylvania will read it carefully. It will show the nefarious methods adopted by the republican leaders to fool and deceive the people. The re publican nominee for the Legis lature in Transylvania is trying to do the same thing: It will be a surprise to intelligent men to learn that the republican candidate for congress in the Tenth District is going about in what he thinks are the backwoods districts in this county and others, making the declaration that the constitu tional amendment requires that men who may offer to register after 1908 must be able to read and write the constitution of the State in the Latin language, and to be able to explain it in “good plain English.” According to reliable information he has not only made such declara tions from the stump, but he has sent out a circular letter to voters of the district making the same statements. Every school-boy in North Caro lina ought to know that there is not one syllable of truth in the dec laration of Mr. Grant and no foun dation for it. No one is any longer surprised that there is no joint can vass of the district. A joint can vas, forsooth is antiquated and Mr. Grant cannot do things out of date. Why then does he attempt the stunts ^vhich Satan performed in the Garden of Eden? Some of the republican deceivers of the people charged in 1900, when the amendment issue was before the p^ple, that white men who were not able to read and write would be disfranchised. The people have lived long enough to find out that falsehood, and they "will live long enough to find out that there is no truth in this new’ deception. There is no reading or writing in Latin, and there is no translation or explanation required of the vo ter. Does Grant, or the man who composed the fraudulent circular issued and circulated among the people, not know that every word in the constitution is already plain English? Does he not know that such words as “ex post facto” and “habeas corpus” lave long since been anglicized and are now found in Webster’s International diction ary as English words along by the side of “expositor” and “hear.” A man who does not know these things is too ignorant to represent the tenth district in congress. If he does know and is seeking to gain the support of men by deceiv ing them or slandering the consti tution he is nnw’orthy to represent the district. Mr. Grant should know that he cannot cowardly de cline a joint campaign and run into the bushes and humbug the i>eople. By such action Mr. Grant is re lying upon falsehood and ignorance as an issue aeainst truth and intel ligence. In such a fight he will lose and ought to. THE WASP ''‘‘"V. '''.-.''rules -. 'n’e don’t starf stinging till there’s something doing wrongs’ . i' ' ' We don’t stop stinging till things are running right. Our sting is (foible-action, center-fire, sixteen-shot and we use steel-jact^ted, explosive missiles. Our range is unlimited—we can sting through the be draggled ermine of a *‘rock quarry” judge just as easy as through the cotton shirt of a one-gallus hill-billy. We w-ill swarm just as quick on a silk beaver as on a wool hat. When you hear us begin to hum you better get right with yourself, for that’s a sign we are shar]3ening onr stinger. And onr stinger is case-hardened, diamond-pointed, and runs with a twist. Jt will go through the thickest hide. No wad of money is thick enough to keep us from stinging through it. No veil of innocence is too thin to protect the just. Our sting don’t hurt or raise any welt unless yqur blood is full of filibh and corruption. If your moral'^nd political system is clean and healthy our sting won’t'htlH you, but if it ain’t, people can hear you cuss and holler for a mile or more. NOTICE! It will not therefore be^necessary for. you to get a Henderspo coun ty paper to publish any words of praise or defense for any of your candidaK-s for office' in Transy 1- yaniacou«,t3> nev^er. mind-wheto e,r they are Tra,nsyjvy, nia citizejia or whether they are recent im portations from Jackson county or elsewhere. Yours truly, The Editor. * “THE EHGLISH HOUSE 9F LORDS.” Lawyer L^n and Doctor Ed ^ i Held a cx)nvention, so they ^aid^ They pot out a tickct with Len at the head- But Doctor Ed and Lawyer. L^n Said ^Transylvania a'int got any men.” So they* went to Jackson and got their “^end.” Their friend from Jackson b^at Jim Heath; He made Joe Pick to gnash His teeth; He beat the stuffing out of Lee; This Jackson man beat our home-raised three. Then Lawyer Len speaks big, says he, ■“My Jackson friend has beat you three. But still you all must vote for me. For here’s your orders from Dr. E. S. E.” But the old line Rads they said to Len, ■“You and your brother are pretty sharp men. Before you took our party m^hand Transylvania men could fill the demand. Who was it you beat our home boys with? A Jackson flopdoodle, named Bill Smith. Now run along and tell Brother Ed That under your rule our pajrty is dead; And listen, Len, you’re surely beat; Yon will be Squire George’s easy meat.*' G. Chawsir. * * » We wish there was a real good, old fashioned republican party in Transylvania. One composed of our own people, who could give and take hard licks struck above the belt. We could have a genuine old time campaign then, but this cosmopolitan aggrega tion of ringsters, composed of two bosses—(that is the English House of Lords) tfiie Jackson county nominee, the Pennsylva nia postmasters and the Ohio delegates—get us confused. It is time, republican friends, that you were returning to fundamen tal principles and getting your party into the hands of Transyl vania men. Now, when Lawyer Len (darn it, we can’t remember that Judge Leon business.) and Brother Ed. read this they will go around to you old line repub licans and tell j^ou not to pay any attention to it as ft is only demo cratic talk, but all we ask you to do is to think it over and you will find that it is like most other democratic talk, it is the truth. You men know that you have not had a fair show and that stran gers have come in and gotten the best of everything. You native men are good enough to vote and work and spend your time and money for the republican party, but you ain’trgood enough to get any “pie.” You don’t even get on as a nominee so that you can say who will get the pie. You may have= been born and raised in Transylvania county but you can’t j2fet anything unless you are an “Englishman” or a “Canadi an,” from Jackson county or from Ohio, or some other North ern state. And now, Uncle Caler, or Squire Heath or Luth, which ever of you—either Lawyer Len Or Brother Ed—comes and talks this over to you, you just ask them who bolds the best of- 4ices jn thi.s.' county, and see if, their names are familiar to you. If have lied, then we will lake it all back, but if we have told the truth, just remember it. * * « D. L. English, Attorney at Law, Brevard, N. C., has sent out a little two by four circular, which said circular we believe, was composed in Buncombe, printed in Henderson, paid for in Jackson and which will be laugh ed at in Transylvania; in which the said learned jurist says that you will have to be able to read, write and translate Latin in or der to vote. Well, that may be English law, but it certainly isn’t American law, and we want the learned Lawyer to show us the North Carolina law on that sub ject. We are not from Missouri but we have to be shown about this. We will discuss this circu lar more ca^-efully later on. We are waiting to give the lawyer a chance to withdraw it before we make him sick of his attempt to fool the good people of Transyl- v’^ania county. * # * Who was that who was tellinsr around here about “Lawyer Len” (excuse us, we meant to say “Judge Leon”) being as busy as a bee in a tar bucket getting a certain Englishman naturalized so that he could vote for one of the “House of Lords.” Now what about that? He and Brother Ed are not satisfied with going to Jackson to get a man to beat some of our ow’n home boys .for the nomination, but they are sending “home” to England to get their voters. Well, that is about right; the way this Eng lish Parliament has managed the politics of the republican party in Transylvania county for the last four years, they will have to go to England or some place where they are hot known to get men to vote for them. *• * * They do say that Lawyer Leo has said that th6 ^rst bill he is going to have passed is to change the name of Transylvania and call this “Great Britian county.” He says that it ought to be named that as it belongs to the “Eng lish. ’ It seems as if he will ei ther do that or have it annexed to Jackson county. “You see if we are annexed we would not have to go across the line to get candidates,” says he.
