Brevard Instityte Notes, It is doubtful if a school has ever held together before the holidays as the Institute has this year. Not a single pupil left the Hqme before school closed. The two literary societies held business meetings Tuesday after noon to arrange ^ for the work of the winter. Miss Law’s first year music pupils gave a recital Monday afternoon. None of those taking part had had a full year’s work, and some had been taking lessons for only a few weeks, but the performance of all was creditable. The most notic- able characteristic of the class as a whole was the correct^ position of the hand and fingers. The value of such recitals to the music pupils is great. The program was as fol lows : I Begin Lula Roseman Satarello Strelezki Oberia Campbell One Little Bunch of Heather Quinlan Monnia Ridenhour Birthday Waltz Kreutzer Alice McBrayer The Goat Ride Bristoe Blanche Craft (a) Sing, Robin, Sing Spaulding (b) The Star Performer Gurlit Iva Edwards Mirth and Gariy Kern Fay Deal The Windmill Kern Eunice Fowler The Younger Set Plaiscr Mary Orr Nochturne Mendelssohn Mary Rice A pretty juvenile cantata was given by the younger pupils Satur day evening, December 19. It rep resented a groui) of children on Christmas eve watcliing for Santa Claus and filling in the time by tell ing stories and singing. When Santa Claus finally came their de light was genuine. The enjoyment of the evening was greatly marred for those in the Home by the strong whisky fumes brought in by some of the guests. It is hard to see. w’hat ideal of gentlemanliness a boy can have w’ho will come into the pres ence of ladies w’itli whisky on his breath. Many of these young la dies had never before been in such company, and feel very much mor tified that the hospitality of the Institute was so abused by many of the young men of Brevard and Transylvania coimty. OBITUARY. " R. T. WHITMIRE. The subject of this nketch died in the state of Texas Dec. 1st, 1908, and w^as buried in Rock Creek ceme- tcry, near Blanket, Texas. Mr. Whitmire vras born on East Fork of Frcnch Broad river, in this county, June 11, 1846. He lived in Tran sylvania until about four years ago, at w’hicli time he sold his home on Little river and moved to Texas. Mr. Whitmire was an old Confeder ate veteran, having enlisted in the Confederate army at about 18 years of age'and served until the close of the war. Ho vcas married to Mrs. Julia Phillips, June 11, 1871. To them w-ere born four children, three sons and one daughter. Mr. Whitmire professed religion soon after he camc home from the war, but did not join the church until about twenty years ago, when Brothers Wampler and Greer held a meeting for two weeks at Divid ing Ridge church. At that meet ing he attached himself to the M. E. Church, South, and lived a Christian until the end of his life. He exemplified the characteristics of a Christian man in all the affairs of his life. He was a kind and af fectionate husband, a loving and faithful father, a good neighbor and a Christian gentleman.. Mr. Whitmire was well known in this cotinty, having spent the greater part of his life commended itself to all who knew him for the virtues that marked his character. It would be hard to say too much of this good man who has taken his departure from this w'orld to, we trust, that heavenly land where the path of the just shines as the per fect day. During the last years of his life Mr. Whitmire was a great stiffercr. Ever since ^is arrival in Texas he has been confined to his room by affliction, w-hich affliction he bore patiently to the end. And so from every land and country we are passing to the great beyond. May the Father of our spirits gather us all safely on the other side. T. T. L. Mr. Carnegie speaks with the calm confidence of the man who has something saved up ^for a rainy day. 1 have For Sale a Small Farm with 6-room House, good Crihf i2 acres of Bottom-4and, 35 acres Woodland; Also orchard of about forty bearing trees. AS A “DISTRIBUTINC POINT.” It is of interest, too, in this connection, to note that practical ly all the freight received at Bre vard is consigned to Henderson ville.—^Hendersonville Hustler. As a sample of bombastic igno rance the above item hasn’t a peer. Before publishing such a statemen'i the pencil pusher of that windy journal shonld have consulted some freight agent or conductor of the Southern rail way. Not a piece of frieght is receivable by any conductor on the Southern system if so ship ped that it must be rebilled at Hendersonville for points on the Transylvania roilroad. Occasion ally through ignorance or error a shipment for Brevard has to be j’ebilled at Hendersonville, but it is a notorious fact that evei'y such shipment reaches here short or damaged. If our neigh bor had a chance at Brevard freights, cs a “distributing point,” most of it would be “ilis- tributed” before it reached here. There is one other fact that our windy contempory doesn’t know, or at least doesn’t adver tise. If a traveler outside the Southern system wants a ticket to Henderhonville he must buy to Asheville, Brevard or Lake Toxaway. Hendersonville is not known to ticket sellers while these three other points are ‘’on the map.” Study the map broth er and find out “where you are at.” Goo^ Medicine tor Cliildren. The season for coughs and co'ds is now at hand and too much care can not b^ used to protect the children. A rhild is much more likely to con tract diptheria or scarlet fever when he has a cold. The quicker you cure his cold the less the risk. Chamberlain’s Cou^h Remedy is the sole reliance of many mothers, ana few of those who have tried it are willing to use any other. Mrs. F, F. Starcber, of Kipley, W. Va., says: “I have never used anything other than Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy for my children and it has always given good satisfaction.” 'This rem edy contains no opium or other nar cotic and may be given as confidently to a child as to an adult.
