Jim Axom, an old and respected colored man of our town, died on Monday at the ags of 68 and was buried on Tuesday. Fate Snelson, while splitting firewood, received a severe cut on the foot which will confine him to his house for several days. Superintendent Henderson tells us that his brother, C. W. Hender son, who was badly Injured some days ago, is improving rapidly. Miss Mildred Bryant of Asheville, who has been visiting her grand- .parents, Mr-, and Mrs. J. J. Ship man, returned home this week. The infant child of . C. M. Cooke, jr., was notified by wire of the death of his brother, Dr, Fred Cooke, at Louisburg, N. C., and left on the Tuesday morn ing’s train to attend the funeral. At a meeting of our county com missioners on Monday it was de cided'^ that the stock law held in the new boundary last week should tifike effect April 15th, and that no fences aro to be built. Dr. and Mrs. Wilson ani little grandson, from Hoopeston, 111., spent a few days with, their old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Fuller, and left Monday for St. Petersburg, Fla., where they own property. The Southern Stock and Farm ing Co. is preparing to build a new barn on the southern end of their property, and we hear that many other improvements are soon to be made in that end of town. Our cattle buyers are doing a substantial- business among the farmers, as 250 sheep left here this week for the Tennessee markets, and another bunch of 100 for Simp son ville, S. C. Very fair prices were paid. An invitation to attend the mar riage of Miss Martha Cordelia Bry son, of CuHasaja N. C. and Rev. John Wilson Briggs on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 1910, has been received by the News editor. Although we could not be present our be6t wishes go out to the newly wedded for a life of content and happiness. Miss Sadie North, secretary of the County Sunday School Conven tion, says the state secretary has sent her some blanks to be filled out by each Sunday school in the county, and she is anxious for each one to fill and return to her as soon as po^ible. Those not having re ceived blanks will please notify her at once. What’s the matter with haying an entertainment of some kind for the benefit of Brevard Band? The boys are putting in faithful time, but it’s a slow process to get a brass band in condition to appear in public. The Woman’s Betterment Asso ciation has inaugurated a move ment to supplement the school fund sufficiently to extend the term of our public ‘ school at least two, probatJty 'three,^months. It will require al>but $250 per month. At their meeting last Thursday afternoon a committee was ap pointed to confer with the school boaAi in furtherance of this plan. W. W. Zachary, chairman of the county board of education, and T. C. Henderson, county superinten dent, were present, and made ad dresses strongly approving the movement.
