The case of Tuttle vs Reid for es tablishing a line between their lands in Hogback was given to the jury Wednesday evening. ' The verdict made the line as conten'ded for by the - Reid interests but gave the Tuttles $100 damages for timber removed. This put the costs of the >snit on the Reids, but gives''them 150 acres more or less, of valuable timber. St. Philips Ohurch, first Sunday after Easter^April 23, 1911. J/KEELY « - M. J. Neely, or “Matt” Neely as <3verybody called himi died at his liome, one of the finest river valley farms only a mile from Brevard court house, on Wednesday after noon, April 19. Mr. Neely was well known in both Henderson and Tran- ^sylvania counties, having returned from the Confederate army after tlie surrender and married here, and has raised a large'family on the farm where his life ended. He was a good citizen, a kind and considerate neighbor, a firm friend and an affectionate husband and father. He had a large circle of acquaintances and friends who will be shocked to hear of his sud den death. He was taken, ill last Saturday’ evening and went to b^, complain ing of a terrible headache. He soon became unconscious, and all efforts to arouse him were unavail ing—congesfion^f the brain being ^ven 4)ut as the cause. He leaves a "^dow ^\id several children^ all grown to maturity. The^uneral took place Thursday as we go to press, and the interment was at Oak Grove cemetery. He ^d passed his three score and ten years, being about seventy-five years old. WADE PAHON DROWNED The whole community was shock ed last Saturday morning about ten o’clock when the word came over the phone from Pisgah Forest that Wade Patton wasidrowned in the French Broad. At once, as fast as wheels could travel, a large number of men left Brevard for the scene of the tragedy. Details of the accident were meagre, and some of the reports were conflicting. Early that morning Wade Patton, Doll Swangin and Spurgeon Ed- mundson^ went down the river oe- low Graham ford bridge to take a boat up' the river for the purpose of%uck shooting. There had been heavy rains for several days previ ous, the water was high, and the current very strong. To make headway against the current,' tho young men had to tow the boat by pulling against the bushes along the bank. ' While passing under the bridge they lost control of the boat, which was struck sideways by the current and dashed against an upright pillar of the bridge. The boat was capsized and all three were thrown into the water. Swan gin and Edmundson caught on to the pillar of the bridge, but Wade, who was in the other end of the boat, was swept down by the cur rent dnder the bridge. He began to swim, and he was a fine swim mer, but suddenly seemed to lose control of himself, sank, and was never seen agaiq, alive. It seems probable that, being overheated by his previous exertions, he was seiz ed with cramp. The other young men climbed up the pillar of the bridge, and the*aw- ful news was soon spread. A large crowd gathered at the river and joined in the search, which contin ued all the rest of that day. When night fell there were still no signs of the body. Sunday morning the search was resumed, and in about twenty-four hours after the acci dent, the body was discovered, about 400 yards below the bridge in a bay of eddy water near the bank. The funeral services took place Monday afternoon at the Davidson River Presbyterian church. Rev. W. H. Davis, who preached the ser mon, mad^ a fine tribute to the character of the deceased. The size of the congregation bore testi mony to the esteem in which .the yoting man was lield. Five young men from the school at Arden, came up to be present at the last rites over their dead friend. Mr. T. T. Patton and family may be sure of the sympathy of the whole community in this terrible loss. FIVE MEN meet death. Great ^Kettle of Molten Metal Ov^ ' turned on Iron Worker«»y ' ^ ^ Five workmen wme killed, tiw> were fatally injured and twelve otiiers se riously hurt at the Midvale Steel works, at Wayne Junction, Pa., when a tiuge container filled with molten steel gave way, the fiery liquid pour ing or splashing over more than a score of the employes. Tlib accident occurred in what l3 known as the “open hearth No. 1.” Sev^al tons of the molten st^l had been poured Into a huge container, and it was being slowly propelled along a traveling crane across the shop to waiting molds. More than twenty men were under and around it guiding the huge vessel with long tongs, whfen, without warn ing, a plug in the bottom of the con tainer burst out and the molten steel instantly began pouring thmugh -the hole. It spluttered and splashed over some of the men, and they were com pelled to let go of the tongs. In thus releasing their hold, the huge* kettle became unsteady,, and in the next in stant it tilted over and poured down/ a solid stream of the molten steel. Business Locals.
