Peary, of the United States Navy, has gone further north in the Arctic than any man ever did before, bt:t ke has failed to reach the North Pole. Peary brings to America the honor cf holding the record of the "farthest north" and to himself the credit of having performed what will robably be hailed by the entire world, when the complete story is known, as the most wondc-rful feat of Arctic explor ing in' history. . That is the record of the ter riblo wreck. Every undertaking shop in the city was filled with corpses, and the old Empire Theater was a morgue with never less than thirty bodies ranged along its walls. 'A special train carried to Philadelphia most of the victims of the wreck, who were residents of that city. Displaced Itsil'Caused Wreck. The authorities believe from the Investigation they have been able to make thus far and from information which has reached them from appar ently reliable sources that a displaced rail cn the drawbridge caused the disaster. A careful examination of the rails and appliances belonging to the draw and to the trestle approach was made daring the day by engi neers representing both the railroad company and the county. It was evident to both sides that the derailment of the wrecked train began when its forward wheels came In contact with the locking pednt of the outer southbound rail. The big length, of steel, which weighs 100 pounds to-the foot and which i the heaviest used anywhere 0:1 The Penn sylvania system, was found jammed toward the middle of the draw for a distance of nearly twenty feet. When it coiucs to fixing the blame for the disaster no one will perhaps play a more important part in the in quiry than Daniel Stewrt, t'l? s'd tender and flagman of the Thorough fare draw. To him.. Is attributed a statement made immediately after, the wreck, and under the stress of great excitement, that the mechan ism of the bridge made it necoerary every time the draw was swung to readjust and realign the rails by hand. Stewart was not put forward by the railroad authorities to deny this statement, but General Manager Vvr. W. Atterbury asserted that Stew art could not have possibly said such a thing.
