The present bad condition or onr roads puts trade and ravel to much inconvenience, and, in a measure, retards the progress and development of our town. Transportation by rail is not sufficient. Our town must bo made accessible frori ail directions, or it will n t properly thrive.. Farmers are losing thousands of dollars every year in the wear and tear progressive cit izens make a new departure and improve the situation, as far as it is consistent, by opening new roads and grading the old roads. Nothing else would be more beneficial to Dunn. Money paid for this purpose would give an immense return. Real estate would appreciate in value, new settlers would locate, our farm ers would improve their lands, and the increase of trade in Dunn would be a most interest-in'- feature. The business men of Dunn are thoroughly active, progress ire, and enterprising, and ar. quicker thun most men to heed a good suggestion. Two weeks ago the Signboard hinted that it would be a great benefit to Dunn to establish a free ferry at Averasboro so as to extendi our trade into the rich and pros perous country lying be yond the Cape Fear. Our mer chants saw the great need of this connection; they immedia tely called a meeting to discus. the matter; and they have ar ranged to lease the ferry for l months. The Signboard on behalf oi the business men of Dunn, sends greetings to our friends beyond the Cape Fear; and we extend a most cordial invitation to on and all to visit our brisk ami growing town. Dry goods, iarm ing utensils, fertilizers of eei y description, and every thiughi the mercantile line will be sold in Dunn cheaper than at liy etteville. Besides this the fann er can save time aud expense by patroniziug Dunn. The fern is free and let all come. Surry him and hope that he abundant success in his new field of labor. The Signboard, the first pa per ever published in Harnett county, is now most liberally patronized by " the people throughout this section of the State. The citizens of Harnett and the substantial business men of Dunn appreciate the good work done by the paper and they promise a continuance of their hearty support. Petty opposi : on will avail nothing. Wo need some protection ; gainst fire and our people iiould give the matter serious thought.
