TRY FOR THE PREMIUMS.
NOTICE
We rrc in receipt of premium list
f cash premiums to te offered for
fieM crops at the annua! fair of North
("arolim Ajiricultursl Society, Ral-j
cigli, October 18th 27ih, 1892. We
give below some of the priemiums
along with .1 he requiieraer.ts neccs
:iry to le eoniplied with, before Uiey
can be competel for.
We insist that some of onr readers
make an effort to secure some of
these prizes.
1 1 can be done. With the rght
preparation and effort, Harnett can-
take :s man- premiums at the next
fair as an- county in the State. We
have the ferti e soil, our lands are
capable of producing a variety of
crops, besidt-s our farmers are as ex
perienced as any in the State. Why
has not Harnett taken as many pre
rniums .13 some other counties at the
fairs formerly, held ? Not because
our farms and farmers are not able
to produce as fine products as other
counties, but because lhere has never
been any effort inadto win a premN
inn. Farmers it will pay you to
try. liven if you do not win you
will lose nothing. The increaeed
production as a result of special pre
peration will more than pay for the
trouble it will be; besides it will
advertise both you and your county.
The season for planting is now
here. Lay olf an acre, fertilize it
thoroughly and plant in corn, cotton,
or Some other crop. You will stand
as good chance to win as any one.
The first and most important re
qu:rcmcnt is, in all cases where pre
miums are offered for the largest
yield per ace, the land must be meas
ured by a competent person and a
certificate to the accuracy of the
same presented with each exhibit.
The following are some of the premium-,
and the products on which
they are given are the ones that our
people are mostly engaged in rais
ing:. Largest yield lint per acre, from 5
acres, first premium, 20; second pre
mium, $12.
Largest yield of lint per acre, from
1 cere, $15. V
Best bale of cotton, first premium,
$20; second premium, $12.
Hest packed ba!e of cotton. $5.
Largest yield of corn from five
acres (two bushels to be exhibited in
the ear.and the required statements
lo be furnkhed. and certificates ts be
iiled), fiirst, $30; second, $10.
Rest two bushels white corn, in the
ear, first $3; second, $1.
Rest two bushels stock corn, in the
ear, first, $3; second. $1,
Largest yield rice on one acre, first.
$10; second, $5.
Rest bushel cleaned rice, first, $3;
second, $2. '
Largest yield of peas on one acre,
one bushel to be exhibited, state
ments. &c, first, $10; second, $5.
Rest bushel black-eye peas, first,
$2; second, $1.
Rest bushel clay pea, first, $2;
second $1.
Rest bushel white peas, first, $2;
second, $1.
Rest bushel speckled peas, first, $2 ;
second, $1.
Rest half bushel ground peas, first,
$3; second, $1.
While on his return from the Re
publican Congressional Couvention
held at Warsaw last week, we met
Hon. O. J. Spears, and of course the
conversation turned on politics. In
reply to the question, what did you
do at the convention ? Mr. Spears
paid : we only elected delegates to the
National Convention, both of which
were colored and inrtructed for Har
rison. I think that he is one of the
b;gest men in the party. Ho has not
in all his diplomatic dealing with
Chilli and England made one solitary
mistake. The Southern Republicans
are solid for him and I beleieva ho
will be nominated by acclamation,
without a dissenting voice. I claimthat
the:idea is entirely original with me,
that Ren has long since burated lvs
grand pa's hat. No; I am not a can
didate for Congress, neither do I ex
pect to be. I have been solicited to
accept a place as presidential elector
for this district, and think it likely I
will accept.. I have no party secrets,
but tell what I know. I believe it is
generally understood that Clark of
Moore is to be the Republican candi
date for Congress in the third dis
trict. We are confident of success
so far as the National ticket is con
cerned. As sure as he lives. Harri
on will be the uext President.
