J- it,; : i- s. ' i V'j THE TIMES, Published Every Thursday, by YOUNG & GRANTHAM. U1J-UI I ' THURSDAY. MaY 12. 1S02. tpmui urn i .J i J. u Owen Mulligan livel ihe life of a liermet in I!linol3, cared for no hu man being and uo human being cared for him. Hp died Inst week. leaving a fortune of $100,000 to heirs whose rmly regret was that he did't die sooner. Star. A Republican sheriir of Tcxarknna Ark., started. out to paiot things red. When he started out he had ssvmal thousand dollars of tlu- people' mon ey, and when tlicj took him in had put all but nhout $900 of it in circu lation. ta New York Cit was tiic scone of a million dollar fire on the 6tli. It was Ihe largest and most disastrous fire lhat lias occurred there for a long irae. There were 30 fire engins at work on the fire at one time, among the losses was a. very large packing bouse. Newbcrne also had a big fire last week loss so mi; 25.000. The National Democratic Conven tion meets in Chicago on the 22nd of June. The State Democratic Convention ncet8 in RakigU on the 18th day - of May, The Congrssional democratic Con vention meets in Clinton on the 20th lay of Jul'. kThe Smithfield Herald passed her 11th birthday last Thursday. We visb for the Herald a bright future, it like many county papers have stood some tests. But under its pre sent management it is doing a good work for the town of Sinithfield ami the county, and feel we sure will pros per. The political skyin Harne tt is clear, and the outlook is all that could be expected. The Democratic county Convention to fleet delegates to the State and Congressional Conventions was held on the 2nd instant. Dob'gatcs were elected who will go to Raleigh on the 18lh, and who will do everything in thctr power to up hold and issert the iireat principles of the Democratic party, Bcfo.e the county convention convened, it was apprehended that a few men would be present who would work in the interest of the TLird pait', but this was not a well grounded apprehen sion, and resolutions were unani mously adopted condemning the Third party, and also eudoising the wise and conservative administration uiT Governor Holt. We think the Convention ought to be congratulat ed upon the harmony that prevailed and upon the resolutions adopted, as we have often had occasion to fay North Carolina and the American union need no Third party. As sure as the Third parly ever develops any strength, the phalanx of the Democracy will be broken, the country will be turned over to the money power, and ithe only political arty from which the laboring mass a can expect relief will die. We can never believe that the roasses of the people, who arc op pressed by a burdeusonie war taritF, juul who have to to pay ihe manufac turer a bouns of sixty per cent, since "tbe passage of the McKinley bill up on artiles of daily consumption, are going to lend their co operation to a jiarty of such a platform as that re cently adoptcJ at the St. Louis Con vention. The Convention studiously avoided any condemnation of the Protective Tariff, which is the vital political issue before the countrj', and we can't help thinking that the Third party leaders are conspiring with the Republicans. GRADY'S ADVICE. Almost the last utterance of Henry Grady were words of warning to his fellow countryman, south and north. Looking foward to the attempted or ganization of a Third party in the south, he said "Many men hold that the white vote of the south should divide, the color line be beaten down, and the southern State ranged on economic or moral questions as interest of re lief demands. I am competed to dis sent from thi3 view. The worst thing in my opinion that could happen Is that the whi te people of the 6outh stand in the opposing factions, with the vast mass of ignorant ar purchas. fcble negro votes between. Consider such a status." And it should be well to consider such a status, for we are confronted with political complication that may lead to ii. However .desirous our peo ple may be to bring about a thorough reform of the financial system, im posed upon them by the Republican part, they should be careful to avoid doing anything to perpetuate this objectionable system Questions, therefore, tending todevide the white vocers of the State shonl 1 be elimi nated fmtn political conventions, and such only presented as are more likely- to harmonize opposing views. But the advocates of a Third party and Third parly principles oppose this fair standard fo political guid ance. They insist that their peculiar views shall be accepted, and their candidate nominated, or they will an independent party and thus do what Mr. Grady, deprecated devide the wh'te voters of the South. The whi'e people of the State who have alwavsafrili ited politically with tiic Democratic party, and thereby rescued North Carolina from Repub lican domination and established good goverenment, are asked to sur render the cardinal doctrine of their polit'cal faith ,or new and untried theories They are not only asked, but it is demanded that political principles be sacrificed as if there war no honor or manhood in politic. The St. Louis. platform is not the platform of the Alliance, Its lean ing principles has been repudiated by every Alliance in North Carolina, and the record of the Alliance will show it, ami why should the attempt be repeated with the view of commit ting Alliancemen, by questionable political diplomacy, to the support of a Third paity ? Tnose who have. convictions, and think it right and honorable to stand by their convictions will not violate their consciences to udvance the po litical fortunes of office seekers, and will stand no trifling in the matter. State Chronicle. PrOnoniiccd Hopeless, Yet Saved. From a letter written by Mrs. Ada K. Uurd, of Groton, S. D., we quote : "Was taken with a. bad cold, which settled on my Lung, cough set in and final'y terminated in Consump tion. Four doctors gae me up, sa' ing I could live but a short time.
