Doubilcss you are quite accustom ed to the elatcment that London is a ijreat city. But probably the fol lonimi w PAa ? ill kallt fH frv Ollh. precinte this statement : Ever' four minutes marks a birth. In -the next two hours after you have road this, thirty bal)ie3 will have boen born, and twenty deaths will 'Jiavc occurred. Think of it I The evening paper tint records the births nnd deaths of the preceding day must give three hundred separate item--. Verily its js and sorrows re a multitude. London ha3 7,000 miles -f streets and if 3011 walked them at the rate or 20 miles a day you'd have to walk almost a year, and more than a year by nearly fifty Any, if 3-ou should re9t on Sundays and if you were a thirsty sort of trav eMcr.nnd euldnt puss a public house, don't be alarmed. The seven thous and miles of streets have 75 miles oC public houses, so you need not think of thirst. In a year London folks shallow down 500.000 oxen, 2,000, 000 sheep, 200.000 calves, 200.000 awinp.-8.O00.000 Acad of fowls, 500, 00;,000 pounds of fi-h, 500 000.000 -oyster. 200.000.000 lobsters, 75, 000,000 buahels of wheat. Rut how "they wash all the food down 3-011 Tniiiht be proud to know. It takes 200.000.000 quarts of beer. Rut more than this, they drink 10,000, 000 quarts -of wine. Combine the wine, rum and hear consumed there Sn one year and we have a total of 260.000. U00, Exchange. THE NEXT U- S. SENATE- There are now 39 Damocrats and Al Kcpubl icsns in the Senate; also two "Farmers Alliance" men lVlIer, of Kansas' and Lyle, of South JJnkota, The terms of 8 DemocarU will ex vire 011 the 4th of March next Hate, of Tennessee, Hlodgel t, of New Jersey,-Mills of Texas, Cockrell, of Missouri, Faulkner, of West Va, Gray, of Doleware. Pare, of Florida ami Turpie, of Indiana, It is hardly probable that the Ke publiean can elect the successor to ar.yono of ihes?, except, possibly, Mr. Turpie. Tl.-e lirui of 24 Kepubiican Sen ators expire at the same time, all from N'irlbren States. The Demo crats have a irood prospect of elect in me successor 01 iaw, 01 .uinne t sola, Felton, of Californa, llawley. of Connecticut, lliscock." of N. Y. , , r x. , , e 1 -I I'lnidiick, of br::kn. Sanders uJor.s i .-, -. Ss' '. er. i)f Wisroiisiu, Sl''"art. A gain of 4 scats would make a tie between the Democrats and Re publicans, and tin re is no good rea son to doubt that 3 of these gains will be secured in New York, MichK gan and Wisconsin, Another would be cer tain in Connecticut if the pop. ular vote could elect a Senator. There is uo likelih o of the Demo cratic strength in the Senate Dei tig reduced by these elections, but a hopeful prospect that tiiev will ob. tain a majority of the body. ! Atlantic Journal. I Emmons Blaine,on of lion. James G. Blaine, died in Chicago June 16th, probably from the over work and ex- citement in the Minuapolis Conven tion. He worked very hard for his father then, and the sickness likely came on from this. Sampson county should be proud of the honor her sons wear. Henry A. Grady, son of Hon. 1$. F. Grady, now in Congress, was the successful contestant for West Point cadetship. The examination took place in Golds boro, N. C, on the 18th inst., and lasted all day. The examining board were Messrs, D. J. Broadhurst, A. D. Ward, and Dr. Geo. L. Kirby. Mr. Grady stood the average grading 63 out of five applicants. His alter nate, Albert Oliver of Duplin, who made an average of 58 13 36. July the 20th is the District Con vention to nominate a Congressman, and also the same day Harnett, Bla den and Sampson selects two Sena tors to represent them in the ncx Legislature. The convention meets in Clinton, We want good men. Who shall they be? We can find them In either county, but our dele gates should begin to look out for the men they want, and decide which county is entitled to the men this time. Tite Times is for any good conservative Democrats whatever county they may hail from. A Card To the voters of Hatnctt county. I take this method of defining my position in reference to a re-election to the office of SharilF, which I now hold at your hands. I have said be fore and say now, that I shall always feel under obligations to the people of Harnett county for the honor the' haye conferred upon me, in giving me the office for two terms, but I do not desire the oflice for another term A great many of my friends have in sisted upon my recalling what I have said and urged me to agree to allow 013' name to run again. Injustice to other gentlemen who have announc ed themselves under the impression that I would not. be be fore the peo ple, I respectfully beg leave to saj I am not a candidate for any po-ilion, and will fall in line in the ranks of the Democratic party, and support with all my heart the nominee of the Convention. Very Resp'j Colin McArtax. The Ohio Democrats nominated a man naaicd Beer on their State tick et. It was dene on the presumption that the average Ohio voter wouldn't object to taking Beer. Star. Some one from Chatham county writing to the Raleigh Chronicle sug gests the name of ex-Governor Jarvis as Chairman of the State Democratic Executive Committee. This would be a capital selection, if Gov, Jarvis would accept it. Star. The Democratic Convention met yesterday in Chicago. The chancts now seem to be for Grover Cleveland and Gray. A full delegation is in attendance, Those who are best at figuring say Ccvelaud will get it on the first ballot. New York wants Boies. Gorman ha withdrawn from the race. Cleveland's friends say they are there till November for Cleveland if necessarv. Don't think hilt's name will go before the Con vention at all. e b m V Ask for Aycr's Sarsaparilla. and do not take any other. So'J bv all , . - J - drijojoists.
