The Legislature showed its regard for the Confederate dead of North Caroliua by passing the bill appro priating $40,000 for a monument in -their honor. The question of changing Harnett county boundaries was defeated or -reported unfavorable by the commit tee to which it was referred. So the next usue is where shall the Court .House be rebuilt, and bow can the county raise the funds to build it with. The Missionary services last week wtre very interesting at t e M, K. -church, addresses were delivered each night by members of the various churches in town. D. of Oxford, one of the most prominent Method ist preachers in the State, died last Thursday. He bad filled several of the best stations as a preacher, was a prominent member of I. O. O. F, and Mason. His death is t great lo6 to the M, E. Conference, to h:s. family and the orders to which he belonged, it was beard all over the State witu aaa rsgret. . . Death of Rev Neill McKay. D. D. On Monday the people of Sumracr rille and Harnett ciunty were called to mourn the death of one of the the county's most prominent citizens. Rev. Neill McKay. He was for a lon time one of the leading minis t erg ot the State and has served bis .people as a preacher and as a citizen well, and leaves that good name and -esteem at bis demise that all good men leave. In hih death his family has lost a faithful father and husband, bis com munity an exemplary man, tha coun tv one of its best citizens, and bis church one of ita brightest jewels. The machiuery act was then taken up, and afUr considerable discussion passed its second and third riadings. The special oider for today was then taken up, the same being a bill to provide for working the couvicts- 011 tfia Dublic roads. - H 4- The bill was ably discussed by Messrx, Alien of Wayne. Watson of Forsyth, and Harris of Mecklenburg. A message from Gov, Carr was. re ceived and read while the discussion was in progress. The Governor urg ed upon the General Assembly the " importance of providing a belter sj's tern of working the public roads. After the reading of the message from the Governor. Mr. Hyde, of Carteret, made a slrong speech a gainst the bill. The chief point made against the bill was that no county which could not raise $1,400. a year could not secure any convict labor at all, Mr. Moore, of Jackson, moved to table the bill, The motion prevailed. A bill to be entitled an act relating to the Board of Health, came up as a special order. The bill was laid on the table. J Mr. Jones, of Caldwell, moved to reconsider the xote by nUich the bill was tabled, and insisted upon imme diate action on bis motion. The mo- tion prevailed; and on that question the ayes and noes was ordered. The vote stood ayes 54, noes 43. So the motion to reconsider prevailed The question recurring upon ibe passage of the bill upon its second reading, the ayes and noes were or dered, and the vote stood ayes 96, noes 26. " Upon Us third reading the bill passed without division, Mr. Gilmer, of Haywood, by unan imous consent introduced a bill to provide for the speedy trial ot certain felonies.
